He realize that his name is not worth a life. In the end of the story John rips of the confession paper so that he would ruin his children’s name. He would rather die than ruin his children’s life. Elizabeth finally realize that she shouldn’t have judge her husband. Reverend Hale realized that the girls were lying and accuse people for vengeance.
His sense of pride prevented him from admitting to the adultery. Thus, the town did not understand Abigail’s motivation as did Proctor. He could have also prevented his demise if he had chosen to sign the paper. However, he feels that his name is “not worth the dust on the feet of them that hang” and chooses death over humility. This play exhibits tragedy because, though Proctor had many opportunities to change his fate, he chooses his demise because his tragic flaw prohibits him from doing otherwise.
Hamlet portrays falsity when using rage against Ophelia after discovering she has been apart of a plot of revenge. He uses this as an opportunity to deny his love for her and degrade her until she felt horrible about her self. “I did love you once but you should have not belived me; for virtue cannot so inoculate our old stock but we shall relish of it. I loved you not.”(3.1.114-119). It becomes clear that Hamlet did truly love Ophelia, yet hid it because he was a coward.
Danforth was one of two judges who traveled to Salem Massachusetts from Boston Massachusetts for the witchcraft trials. Danforth was a man in his later years and was looked at as powerful and authoritative. He was an intimidating man and others feared him, which made him angry because he believed he and Judge Hathorne were guided by God. To Danforth, nobody should fear the court unless guilty because innocent individuals have nothing to hide. Danforth shows Salem his authority by wrongly convicting citizens, controlling the court, and enforcing society’s laws.
As Thomas Jefferson once said, “Nobody can acquire honor by doing what is wrong.” In Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible, John Proctor struggles to act honorably and maintain his good name in the Puritan society of 1692 Salem. John Proctor is said to be, “…a sinner not only against the moral fashion of time, but against his own vision of decent conduct”(Miller 19). After his wife Elizabeth discovers his affair with Abigail, she loses trust in her husband. John blames her for having a cold heart and does not fully accept his own responsibility in destroying her trust by cheating on her. In this case, John acts as a dishonorable man, claiming, “I have not moved from there to there without I think to please you, and still an everlasting funeral
He cares about her wife, Eurydice, as well because Creon wanted to suicide when he saw his son and wife died in scene 8. In the play Antigone, Creon is not a loving ruler because he is stubborn and doesn’t listen to advice and Creon doesn’t listen or believe the prophet. He only wants what he thinks is the best. He doesn’t even bother asking the people of Thebes for advice. He is a one man state and will only does what benefits the people of Thebes.
A radical religion called Puritanism was vitally important to the people of Salem, and they were extraordinarily paranoid of the Devil. Two characters in the book The Crucible demonstrate how Puritanism affected the society. Judge Danforth is an example of religious ignorance and ends up being the person who condemns everyone, suspecting they are all witches. On the other hand, John Proctor is a level headed farmer who watches as his friends and their wives are accused of witchcraft and sentenced to death, that is, until his own wife is accused. Using these foil characters, Arthur Miller exemplifies the difference between people who are weak minded and cowardly versus people who are strong-minded and brave.
Also, Abby accuses Mrs. Proctor of witchcraft for her own self-interest. She wanted Mrs. Proctor to be killed so she could have Mr. Proctor to herself. Lastly, Arthur Miller underscores the magnitude of personal indiscretion in influencing social upheaval. During the witch trials, people were afraid of their own sins being exposed and they tried anything they could to keep it a secret. John Proctor tried to keep his affair with Abigail from the court as long as possible until he pretty much had to break down and confess it.
The witches god doesn't like this which causes the the witches to betray Macbeth, “Spiteful and wrathful, who (as others do) Loves for his own ends, not for you. But make amends now: get you gone, And at the pit of Acheron Meet me i'th morning: get you gone, Will come to know his destiny. Your vessels and your spells provide, Your charms and everything beside” (III. v. 12-19). The witches god is saying that why are they putting up with Macbeth and that he only cares for himself.
It was a terrible mistake, but in her heart she never loved anyone except me (137).” As he argues with Tom you can see his defiance to believe that Daisy could love another. He led himself on a path where everything he is and can be is Daisy. He became obsessed with her that the love he had for her lead him to believe that she isn't capable of loving anyone, but him. After his dream was killed after his argument with Tom over Daisy, Nick tries to tell him to go someplace else for a while, but “he wouldn’t consider it. He couldn’t possibly leave Daisy until he knew what she was going to do.
