Critical Analysis of a “A Raisin in the Sun” A raisin in the sun was written by an author, activist and playwright, Lorrain Hansberry, an African-American woman. Her play was performed in 1959 in Broadway and it was deemed a successful show. The play was about a lower class black family that struggled to be accepted and treated equally in the south side of Chicago, whom all dream of a better life. Opportunity arises when they received a ten thousand dollar insurance cheque when Lena Younger (Mama) husband died. Lena Younger, Walter Younger and Beneatha Younger all had plans for the money. They all lived in a small cramped apartment and with this, they all had dreams. Beneatha wanted to go to medical school; Walter wanted the money to invest into a Liquor store so he can provide enough money for his family and Lena wanted to move into a new house. With Ruth (Walter’s wife) being pregnant, she thought of abortion because the troubles and stress the Younger family sees. Mama proceeded to buy the house in Claybourne Park without notifying anyone, although in those times, there were a huge cultural difference between whites and blacks. Claybourne Park being a white neighbourhood, they seemed intimidated to welcome the Younger family. A representative, Mr. Linder, came to the family’s apartment of behalf of Claybourne Park to purchase the house from them, but Walter soon realizes the purpose of his visit and sent him through the door. Walter was upset at Mama for using the money to buy the house but Mama gave Walter the rest of the money she had left and gave him advice on what to do with the money. Some of the money was for Beneatha’s schooling and the rest in a savings account, but Walter took all of the money and invested it, into a liquor store with two other friends. After the news came to Walter that the money was stolen by Willy, Mama was angry and disappointed
