The Geats epic King was a picture perfect Anglo-Saxons hero. He was the strongest man on earth while showing courage, wisdom, and faith to his people. Along with strength he had the super powers to help him fight his battles and gain all the glory at the end of the day. Even though Beowulf followed all the "standards" of an epic hero he still showed some unique characteristics. In the end he became an inspiration for all the people of the land because
“My lord Higlac/ Might think less of me if I let my sword/ Go where my feet were afraid to.” Beowulf does not want to bring shame upon his country or king by not fighting fair. This total loyalty to king and country is a trait that the
As a Knight of the medieval time period you had to live by the Chivalric Code. This code was a code of conduct and stated that knights or nobles must be brave warriors, virtuous Christians, and must fight selflessly for justice. In Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Gawain attempts to live up to the Chivalric Code but falls short at moments not only for fear of losing his life but also because of his individuality. In the beginning of the legend Gawain is nothing more than the nephew of King Arthur and his life is not greatly valued. A mysterious Green Knight rides into Arthur’s hall and challenges anyone who is willing to a simple contest.
Not only were there people that had faith in Beowulf, Beowulf had faith in himself and God. He was confident in the task that lay ahead of him, “That I, alone with the help of my men, may purge all evil from this hall.” Beowulf knew if he stayed self-assured and positive he could defeat the beast; however, his confidence and faith in himself came from a faith in a higher being. Because religion was such a big part of Anglo Saxon culture, Beowulf the mighty warrior, put his fate in the hands of God. Right before one of his big battles Beowulf exclaimed, “God must decide who will be given to death’s cold grin” (Beowulf, 40). He ultimately knew that whatever was to happen was up to God.
Beowulf is definitely brave for fighting and living his life to protect others. For example he battles the treacherous monster Grendel in order to ensure that the rest of the village was safe from the tyranny of this beast. Despite the fact that he conquers this beast alone he was supposed to have help but was abandoned at the last second. This makes the task much more difficult for Beowulf. This quote gives certain evidence that Beowulf fights for others: “A prince of the
However, the chance of failure is great, that is why most people study for exams. This is contradictory to Beowulf who applies full belief in his thoughts, so much to risking his own life to vanquish evil, even if it meant putting everything on the line to do what he promised. He risked his life, his material wealth, and his men, who were loyal to him and would die for him, to save the people of Herot. Beowulf may not have thought of the safety of his warriors, in the short run but was looking out for everyone in the long run, by "quickly commanded a boat fitted out." He was not conscious of others' lives, but instead focused on his bigger goal of vanquishing evil.
They need strength physically and mentally because no one wants a king that can be manipulated, and physically someone that can protect them. They also need integrity which is the main one because the people want a leader they can trust and have morally good values. Even though Sir Gawain and Macbeth are exceptional leaders, Beowulf makes the best leader for his people because he sacrificed his life for his people and able to inspire them as needed. The story of Beowulf begins as a young Geat warrior who is super confident and has overcome the most horrifying of feats, comes herot to deal with a treacherous monster called Grendel. Beowulf defeats Grendel with his bare hands and then must fight his mother after that has happened Beowulf leaves herot and returns to his home land and after his uncle dies becomes king, he rules for fifty years and becomes a wise and great leader.
Why? This is due to the theory of the nature of man. The nature of man is what every person in the world seeks for, because it is in our “nature.” We all search for a warm shelter, food, love, lust. In Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Gawain prayed for food and shelter on his journey to find the Green Knight, and when he looked up, there was Bertilak’s castle. He resisted the temptation of the Lord’s lady’s lust, but because he is still human, he could not push away the occasional greed that any person feels now and then, and kept the green girdle all to himself.
The ring was a major factor that made Bilbo become invisible , which indeed helped in battle to defeat his enemies . The ring make Bilbo defy the laws of conventional Hobbit living . First Bilbo was helping himself out of trouble but with the ring by his side he heightened confidence , he started helping out his friends himself . The ring helped Bilbo saved the dwarves from the giant spiders , wood elves and many more . The greatest personal accomplishment he made was giving away the arkenstone to Bard to create peace .
I am old now but I will fight again. Seek fame still, if the dragon hiding dares face me” (624-628). Describes this leader’s heart and love for his people, because he is the king he no longer needs the fame and glory he already has this. But he proves to be responsible and goes to take on the dragon without any aid of his people. Beowulf is a hero in every way.
