But what choices she made, turned her into a perpetrator. “It came to me that Mayella Ewell must have been the loneliest person in the world.” Upon hearing this, I thought of Mayella as a victim. She had eight other people in her house with her, but no one ever helped her with chores or shown any affection for her. When asked if she had friends, she seemed completely confused by the idea of having friends. She wasn’t accepted into society because of who her family was.
“The boy was dead the moment Mayella opened her mouth and screamed. It’s not right, but sometimes we can’t change the minds of white men.” Tom Robinson was innocent and most people know it. Mayella Ewell was obviously coached to lie- she stopped answering questions at one point. Mr. Bob Ewell was a low man who no doubt abused his children. It was obvious that Mr. Ewell beat his daughter, not Tom Robinson.
Tom Robinson’s case was an example of injustice due to the fact that the jurors had not gathered any evidence that proved Tom Robinsons guilt, Atticus had proved the court wrong but that was not enough for a racist and biased group of jurors to allow Tom Robinson to leave freely. Research
To Kill a Mockingbird Tom Robinson’s Trial I looked around nervously while the people of Maycomb entered the courtroom. I knew that I was innocent and Atticus as well thought that. My only worry was the word of a white man even white trash as Mr. Ewell was more credible than the word of a black. Mr. Tate the town’s sheriff was called to the stand to testify. Mr. Tate said that on the night of November 21 I raped Mayella Ewell in her house, I don’t remember what day that was because I don’t keep track and don’t have the best of memories.
Atticus Finch is ridiculed by the townspeople for being a moral human being and sticking to his beliefs in defending an innocent colored man. As explained by Lee through her characters Tom Robinson, Boo Radley and Atticus Finch, the mockingbird is a symbolic representation of innocence, purity and virtue. To begin, the community of Maycomb basically indirectly murdered Tom Robinson. Despite the fact the man was helpful and kind - especially toward Mayella, who charged him of raping her - Tom was sent to trial and then found guilty even after Atticus Finch had verified his guiltlessness. His responsibility was all based on the color of his skin, not his true moral character.
William Penn and William Mead were had to attend Sessions Court at Old Bailey on September 1 and answer the indictment for an unlawful and tumultuous assembly, before a bench of four presided by Mr. Justice Thomas Howel , two other judges, Thomas Bloodsworth and John Robinson, and one observer, Samuel Stirling. Edward Bushell was part of the jury for the case. Penn and Mead both pleaded not guilty and their case was put over until September 3. On the 3rd September William Mead and William Penn were asked to remove their recognizable hats and as good Quakers, they refused to do so and were promptly fined for contempt of court by Justice Thomas Howel. The witnesses, Cook and Read could not remember what Penn or Mead actually preached. In the end the jury found the two "guilty of speaking in Grace Church Street" but refused to add "to an unlawful assembly".
When it came to the court, the courthouse was filled with people, and when Atticus actually proved that Tom was innocent, people were furious. Because Mayella had bruises on the right side of her face, arm, and neck, but what people didn´t know was that Tom couldn´t use his left hand , because it was shorter than the other and it hung dead by his side, and he therefore could only use his left hand, so he couldn´t have hit Mayella or raped her. It had probably been done by someone who had been left handed, most likely Bob Ewell, her father, Atticus then claimed that Mayella had lied about the rape because she broke the „code“ that says white women cant be attracted to black men, and Atticus proved this in front of the jury that Tom Robinson was innocent, but that wasn´t enough, the jury still found Tom Robinson guilty, just because he was black. After that, Tom Robinsons tried to escape, he tried to run away and climb over a fence, and got shot trying to run away and was killed, when Atticus found out, he personally went to miss Robinsons house and tells her that Tom has died, anybody else would have sent a messenger to do that, because a white man should not spend time in a black neighborhood.
Milam and Bryant committed a cruel murder and a trial was soon to come for their actions and created a riot of angry blacks after 50,000 people saw the picture of Till in Chicago. I am very opposed against the trial of Emmett Till because I feel it was not properly handled. On September 19, only three weeks after Till’s death the trial began and possessed an all white jury. In addition, Clarence Strider, a white sheriff of Mississippi was responsible for finding all the evidence and witnesses. Being a very white based court room this created much fear among blacks to come out and tell the truth about Till.
In this trial, there is an African-American named Tom Robinson. Tom Robinson is being accused of raping Mayella Ewell. There is no evidence of the rape, but there is evidence of Mayella being beaten by her father Bob Ewell. When the jury comes out to give the courtroom the verdict, Tom Robinson was found guilty of raping Mayella Ewell. The only reason Tom was found guilty, was because he was black and Bob Ewell was white.
Parks was as tired as anyone else on the bus that day and “being arrested for something as fatuous as taking a seat is implacable” (Benson 209). Parks stood up for what she believed in, as did Atticus Finch in “To Kill a Mockingbird”, fighting the battle with Tom Robinson, convinced he did not rape Mayella Ewell. “My pity does not extend so far as to putting a man’s life at state, which she has done in an effort to get rid of her own guilt” (Lee 232). Even though Atticus pities Mayella Ewell for the incongruence’s in her life, he’s not going to be dishonest about something he is surely certain of. Like Atticus Finch, Parks didn’t lie to the officials when they came to arrest her, she was not apprehensive or ashamed, she walked off the bus well aware of what she had done.
