Rudolf Hoss was appointed commandant of one of the first Nazi concentration camps in the New Territories of the camp that did not yet exist. No one, especially Hoss predicted that the camp, within five years, would become the sight of the largest mass murder the world has yet seen. In the beginning of 1941, Jews from countries occupied by Germany were rounded up, packed like cattle into freight trains, and shipped to Poland. This was officially the beginning of the Holocaust. Auschwitz was the largest extermination center in Poland; it was used for the Jews who lived in Germany or other countries occupied by Germany. But overall the Holocaust was responsible for the death of nearly two out of every three European Jews. These people either died from starvation, gas…show more content…
