The mentally ill or homeless. Someone who is mentally handicapped or medically dependent people, such as nursing home patients or people with dabilitating diseases like MS, Parkinson's, or cancer. The elderly are at risk as are children. This is because they have nobody to protect them and are often abused by people in their lives. These are a few things that might predispose one to abuse.
A person living with a carer may increase the chances of abuse, the elderly person is reliant on person to care for them and this may cause stress and resentment if the carer is unable to cope and have a poor relationship with the service user. Vulnerable adults in a care home environment are more susceptible due to understaffing or poor staff training. The risk of abuse may increase if a vulnerable person is living or in contact with someone who has a history of violence or sexual abuse, continuing the cycle. An individual who is or feels isolated may be more vulnerable to abuse as they have no support network and have no contact with friends and family. Poor communication between the service user and carer is a factor, he or she may be unable to express their concerns or opinions.

Groups that have a higher risk of becoming vulnerable include, children, people with learning and physical disabilities, people suffering with mental health problems, chronically ill people and the elderly. Age concern (1986) defines vulnerability in the elderly as ‘people in need of some support, help and/or advice in order to prevent personal or social deterioration or breakdown. Without this their level of dependency on others or their ability to manage their lives as they wish, might deteriorate to the point of necessitating their removal to institutional care, which is not their preferred option and might otherwise be prevented or postponed (page 11).’ This statement is proven in my clinical experience. Whilst on placement on a busy acute medical ward, at a local hospital, I helped to care for an elderly lady, whom I shall refer to as Mrs Berry. Mrs Berry was 87 and had been admitted to hospital following a fall

As a child (and even now when Allison is a teenager,) Allison feels alone and isolated in a hostile environment because her parents and (and even her peers,) are not caring towards her, hence the reason why she is so reserved and sensitive. Horney also theorized that there are ways that humans search for security in life, and one of them is moving towards people. It is evident that Allison does this because she does attention-seeking actions such as pouring the all the contents from her purse, squealing and banging her head against the table. This is to seek affection and recognition from others to build meaningful, and useful relationships so that she does not feel helpless or
It may also be because the child has committed an offence. Some possible causes in behaviour which might lead to problems for children, young people and their families may include stress, anxiety and depression. Many children suffer from stress, leading to poor school performance and emotional and behavioural problems. Stress may be the result of an unstable home life or feeling of being unloved. Their parents may not have the skills for bringing up children, or the child feels the demands for achievement and success are unrealistic.
