My patients: My patients are here (hospital) for a reason.
In my work role I also have a responsibility to provide a duty of care to all patients receiving care. Promoting health and well-being is a valuable part of a health care professional, it takes on the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC, 2008) principles that all individuals should be treated with the utmost respect and receive the highest standard of care. This reflective essay aims at explaining how learning experiences in two different health care settings have helped build on my ability to protect those vulnerable people in society and promote good health and wellbeing. Gibbs (1998) model of reflection will be used throughout the essay to describe the event, feelings, evaluation analysis and conclusion and out an action plan in place for future events. My first placement was a residential unit for those people with learning disability, my second setting was a maternity unit and I experienced both neonatal and antenatal care. Pseudonyms will be used in accordance with The Nursing and Midwifery council (NMC, 2008) to protect confidentiality.
As nurses, we have an important role as patient advocate. There is no doubt that patients need nurses’ care and support, therefore, they expect the nurses to meet their demands and protect their best interests. As one of the patient’s most trustworthy healthcare providers, nurses are expected to advocate for all patients regardless of their condition. Hence, nurses should advocate patient’s rights through the way of maintaining a safe environment, which includes the protection of confidential information. According to Taylor, Lillis, LeMone, and Lynn’s book Fundamentals of Nursing, “Nurses should respect patients’ will and be loyal to them at any time as well as carefully evaluate the competing claims of the patient’s autonomy” (Taylor p.103).
Every hospital has its own set of values in which the staff must abide by. Aultman Hospital’s values states that, We will: recognize and accept the unique talents of every Aultman team member, exceed customer expectations, achieve success through teamwork, create a positive and safe work environment, educate our community, manage our resources cost-effectively, and maintain trust and integrity in all relationships (Aultman Hospital, 2014). These values are the basic expectations and assumptions for the patients when receiving care. Potential students in the medical field also look to these values as a foundation in their education. Dr. Mark Riley, a chiropractic physician since 1992, had to obtain a professional degree with a licensure and continued education in order to become employed.
