Also Ellen wants to move because she thinks that it hard for their baby to breathe because of the dust in the air. The feeling of isolation creeps up on Ellen when Paul is not there and she knows that the nearest neighbors are far away and her house would be very hard to reach in the dust storm that she is experiencing. Another reason that Ellen feels isolated is of lack of communication with others this causes her to break down and eventually run away with the baby to try to get away from the storm "I'm so caged- if I could only break away and run".
The Day They Set Out Response Brandon Moreira In the short story “The Day They Set Out” by Beverly Harris, the protagonist, Jean is stuck in a life in which she does the same predictable routine. This makes her feel empty inside, and that she needs to try something new. The causes for her emptiness and difficulties are that, because of her lack of social skills, she has almost no friends. Her husband, Ross does not love her anymore, so he looks at other women to satisfy himself. Also, her lack of intelligence has left her with no job and an inability to get a job.
She didn’t enjoy her time spent there so why she was so willing to come back. Some people never get enough of the life they live even if it‘s bad . Its just like a women who is in a abusive relationship and we wonder why the never leave. Its because once someone adapted to a certain life style the desire for change is slim to none. The narrative made it clear that she didn’t fit in with the people in her town but feared leaving because that lifestyle was all she ever known.

Even though their situation seemed bleak, Elena felt that she should still carry out simple motherly duties, like celebrating her daughter’s birthday, to make Lina feel more secure. As her mother she felt it her responsibility to try and brighten up her daughter’s day in any way she could. By doing this Elena was trying to give Lina hope and maintain some semblance of normality as well as celebrate a milestone in her child’s life.
