We take great pride in providing all our citizens with the means to carry on with daily life and are guaranteed with our Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Being a first generation Canadian, the topic of Canada’s own culture is very interesting to me. My family and I are part our Canada’s multicultural community. We are able to keep our cultural values alive in Canada and have a right to do so, which is what makes us Canadians. It is not good when Canada as a nation is considered a product of Americanization, and when people consider Canada to not have its own culture.
The government respect the rights of people and satisfy the people’s needs. The constitution of Canada is the highest law and in the constitution there is the charter of rights and freedoms. The charter states all the rights and freedoms of individuals, and makes sure we live in a fair and free country. Two examples of this is the right to practice your religion, and the right to be free from search and seizure not backed by evidence. The taxes in Canada are what we pay to the government for them to provide us with the basic necessities of life; it funds various social programs that give assistances to people with less money.
Having our senators being reformed would also help create a diverse and a representative body. Senators better capture, and express (cwf.ca). Senators should be elected after a reform; they are able to devote more time to committee work. Therefore, having senators reform and chosen by Canadians is a good thing, because we want the people who are going to be the ones making decisions for us also be part of our country as well, and it’s also a great way to keep our country diverse and responsible. Why stop something that is been carrying on for a long time, and break tradition?
Canada is a very great country because we practice equality and multiculturalism. AS Canadians we should become examples for other countries on what equality really is. henever there are human rights abominations happening around the world we need to help in whatever way possible. The fact of the matter is that everyone is in this world together. There is nothing that makes us higher than another.
Secondly, The Balfour Report allowed Canada to receive autonomy and gave Canada equal status with Britain for creating laws. (Cranny p.55/56) This was one of the biggest steps for Canada to become more self-sufficient. It makes more sense that the elected members would be in charge of running the country. After all, the citizens did not vote for British representatives to set the laws. It would have
Trudeau wanted French Canadians to feel more comfortable and to feel like they belonged to Canada by saying, “Canada will be a strong country when Canadians of all provinces feel at home in all parts of the country, and when they feel that all Canada belongs to them (Trudeau)”. To make the French Canadians feel more at home, Trudeau created a magazine called Cité Libre (Britannica Online, 1), meaning Community of the Free. Trudeau passed an act which made French and English the official languages of Canada. The Official Languages Act made federal offices offer services in both English and French. Trudeau wanted to balance the equality between French and English Canada so he could preserve the French culture in Canada.
I know there’s been arguments, and I understand. I still say that it’s important to keep God in the picture. “God” not only goes for Christianity, but Judaism, Islam, and Buddhism. I don’t think atheists have much to complain, but that’s another story. One of the most important things the Pledge of Allegiance means to me, is that all Americans will be shown justice, and fight for it.
Popular sovereignty is the idea that the people govern themselves, meaning that the people choose who they would like to be in charge of the country or state as stated in Madison’s report of the Debates in the Federal Convention speech, the members of the first branch of the National Legislature will be elected by the people and that the second branch will then be elected by the members of the first branch. This shows that the people were part of the whole election process from the start and that those who were chosen in the first branch were trusted enough to be put in charge. It gives the people freedom of choice and to choose the authority whom they can depend on to get the job done. The Constitution begins with “We the people” and it continues with “ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.” referring to the people who put it together, but in those times it included only those free, people who owned property and clergymen whereas now it includes all legal residents of the country. Therefore the principle of popular sovereignty is declared.
Did you know that The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms was set in place in 1982? The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms is set in place to help protect the individual rights of Canadians. Within the Charter, Canadian citizens have many rights and freedoms, for example, the right to express their opinion, vote, move freely around Canada and to be free from discrimination. If the government enacts legislation to refute these rights and freedoms, as Canadians, we are able to take the issue to the Supreme Court of Canada to fight for our rights. Democratic rights give you the right to vote for members of the House of Commons and the provincial legislature.
Prime Minister described “Just Society” as one in which everybody will be free in all types of expression. It was the ideal concept for a united Canada, where all the citizens will have the motivation to participate in the development of our country. Over the past few decades, Canada has been on the leading edge with equality between people, this has not always been the case. Canada discriminated its own Ukrainian-Canadians, Japanese-Canadians, and Chinese-Canadians. For these examples, Canada has not always been a “Just Society.” The first example of “unjust” society in Canada was shown toward the Ukrainians.
