Ferdinand planned to make some major changes once he had become Emperor, some of these prospective changes made him very unpopular. The Austro-Hungarian Empire currently had control over Bosnia and Herzegovina. The terrorist group decided that Ferdinand should be assassinated before he gained enough power to create further oppression for the two countries. This trigger action caused the involvement of Germany, Russia, Serbia and Austria-Hungary. However, the war itself was caused by nationalism, alliances and Germany’s fear of encirclement. Nationalism was the central cause of WWI because, due to the nationalism of the Slavs, the Balkan states became a powder keg. Austria-Hungary made the Serbs fear annexation while the Slavs inside the country wanted a Great Serbia.
A desire to protect American citizens was a crucial factor in the US entering the war in 1917. The sinking of the Lusitania by the Germans on a passenger ship was seen as a threat to Americans and created a feeling of hostility against Germans in America as the Germans had clearly killed innocent Americans. It pushed them further towards war in order to make sure their citizens were safe. The Zimmerman telegraph was also very significant. This telegraph which showed a potential alliance about to be formed between Mexico and Germany eventually became the deciding factor that led them to the war.

But the most important came from countries distrust for one another because it led the Great powers of Europe-Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy, Britain, France, and Russia signed treaties pledging to defend one another. There were multiple events that led to World War I in 1914. On July 28, 1914 an event that provoked the outbreak of World War I occurred; Archduke Franz Ferdinand (heir to the Austrian throne) and his wife were shot to death in the city of Sarajevo by Gavrilo Princip, member of the Serbian Nationalist group known as “The Black Hand”. Austria-Hungary blamed the Serbian Government for the attack, however, Russia supported Serbia. Austria-Hungary sent an ultimatum to Serbia. Austria wanted to send Austrian investigators to investigate Archduke Franz Ferdinand's assassination in Sarajevo and they wanted to abolish all major Serbian organizations, which Serbia refused, and Austria declared war on Serbia.
WHY DID THE SCHLIEFFEN PLAN FAIL? Germany was left in a dangerous encirclement by the triple entente agreement. Germany’s army had a planned to counter this threat and COUNT ALFRED VON SCHLIEFFEN would devise the plan. Germany concentrated on its troops the west to b able to conquer France. They would turn around their army and attack Russia because Russia was expected to take long to mobilise its enormous but undated army.
