How has Lord Capulet’s attitude changed from the beginning of the play? What type of father does he seem to be? Juliet reaction was that she refused to marry Paris, but her father’s reaction was very shock and sudden. He said to Juliet if she refused to the marriage, Juliet wouldn’t be recognized as the Lord Capulet’s daughter. Lord Capulet’s attitude just suddenly changed because he would rather have a great family reputation instead of his only daughter marrying her love.
“Do not put such unlimited power into the hands of husbands. Remember all men would be tyrants if could.” –Abigail Adams In this quote Abigail Adams was stepping up for women to put a stop to their inequality for fairness and equality. She was an advocate for many women who are out there married with no education nor rights. She wanted them to be capable of standing on their own feet without hesitation or discourage towards their husbands. Abigail Adams believed women should be educated and be recognized for their intellectual capabilities, so they could guide and influence the lives of their children and husband instead of being companions.
During the sixteenth century in Italy, marriages were pre-arranged by the parents and/or guardians, whether or not their children had passionate feelings for each other. Such is the case in William Shakespeare’s tragedy, Romeo and Juliet. The prospective groom, County Paris, actually appears to love his intended wife Juliet, who, unfortunately for Paris, loves another man—Romeo. Under scrutiny, Paris’s love for Juliet rings false, while Romeo only professes his own love more deeply. Paris’s insincere love does no justice to his case; in fact, it serves to further illuminate the legitimacy of Romeo’s adoration.
Women in the 1800’s were dominated by their husbands and expected to be submissive in every way. After Kate’s real life husband died, she decided to voice her opinion on this topic. Sometimes the rules and morals that society or religion teaches us, isn’t really what we want for our own lives. Especially when it comes to sex, romance or love there are a lot of different opinions. Certain cultures may teach that sex (of any form) before marriage is not wrong while others believe that our morals change as society allows it to.
Edna wanted this lifestyle to be her ownself and not live as someone she did not want to be such as M.Rag the way that society intended on her living. -M.R decision in life was to she have her own independence/identity. She lived the life she wanted to live which to Edna seemed like the "good life". M.R lifestyle choice had a cost from not having a nice house to nice clothes everything that Edna had. Having the indpendence Edna wanted would cost her the lavicous lifestyle she once knew.
The practice of polygamy distorts the meaning of marriage. Goodman says that "defenders argue that polygamous marriages are freely entered, freely left, well protected by law or custom" (pg 90). I believe this type of marriage is wrong for the women involved and it breaks down the institution of marriage. The women are denied the intended bond they are to have with a husband. Not being able to have this bond disables her trust and intimacy with her husband, these are meant to strengthen a relationship and marriage.
Their Marriage is an excellent example of this. The fact that Juliet proposes marriage at such an early stage in life and in her relationship with Romeo shows true commitment to love. “Romeo and Juliet do actually marry,” but it has to be through love because other parts of marriage are not involved such as “domestic arrangements, children, or even cohabitation” (Lerner 3 of 9). If love did not play a part in the marriage of Romeo and Juliet, then they would have absolutely no reason to marry. In fact, Juliet made the commitment to marry Romeo knowing that her father wanted her to marry Paris.
Even though Ismene didn’t help out with the crime she still wanted to risk her life for Antigone, but she wouldn’t let her because she didn’t do the work. Antigone wants to die for the right reason, that she did something right for someone else. But since Ismene didn’t do any of the crime she didn’t want her to die because she did something wrong. Antigone wanted Ismene to live and she descried to live she didn’t do anything wrong. I think Ismene changed her mid because Antigone is her sister and you always stand up for family.
Friar is Not Neutral In Romeo and Juliet, Friar Lawrence is a key character since he is partly responsible for the death of Romeo and Juliet by providing them assistance; making him a character that is not neutral in the story. Friar Lawrence hesitantly agrees to marry the couple after advising Romeo that these “violent delights have violent ends” therefore asking the couple to “love moderately” (II. vi. 9/14). He understands that this marriage is based upon an impulsive decision made by the couple since he knows how Romeo reacts to love.
Women in Gilead are not only forbidden to vote, they are forbidden to read or write, dress codes are used as a way to subjugate them; ordinary colours become symbolic of their social status while masking individuality, which is discouraged in the regime. Offred, the novel’s protagonist represents these women as a handmaid. She is not a hero. Offred's internal conflict was part of the grinding process, and this message was manifested through Offred when she decided to fight back. At times she wanted to give up and accept the will of the regime, but her memories and her humanity wouldn't let her.
