Swift is also targeting an audience that he believes is ignorant. He is mocking the politicians of Ireland and how they are creating illogical plans to bring Ireland out of the debt crisis that it was in during his time period. Swift was simply providing another plan to help alleviate Ireland of this debt. Swift and Larkin may both be writing satires however they are not approaching these in the same fashion. Larkin points out a problem and offers a solution but does not defend it because it is an insolvable problem and does not have a solution.
The Depression was recorded to have decreased the marriage rate which helped lead to a decline in the birth rate. It is documented to be the first time in American history that the birth rate dropped below replacement level (Mintz & McNeil, 2014). An increase in illness and disease occurred from poor living conditions and lack of income. Unemployment rates skyrocketed which led to an increase in eviction rates and homelessness. Men were

The lack of motivation caused by years of not having a job and watching your family suffer in poverty is a condition that not too many of us are familiar with. “Native American Poverty,” by Tom Rodgers justifies the allegations that a large percentage, about 25%, of the Native Americans live in poverty. “According to the US Census Bureau, these Americans earn a median annual income of $33,627. One in every four (25.3 percent) lives in poverty and nearly a third (29.9 percent) are without health insurance coverage.” The lack of money has become a huge component in the dismemberment of the culture that the Natives so lavishly submerged themselves into, and the picking up other undesirable traits such as drinking. The Irish were also victims of reverse discrimination, because of their fellow Irishmen who became “runners” in the United States. These “runners” would find new Irish immigrants as they stepped off the boats, and lead them straight to high priced, rodent infested rooms, with no water, no bathroom and no windows. The Irish also found themselves to be victims of redlining in the United States as well. The Irish would take any unskilled jobs they could find in order to earn money; however, there were only a limited amount of unskilled jobs (historyplace.com).
Paralysis and the Dubliners Paralysis is described as the failure to take action or make progress. In many stories from the Dubliners, a character has an aspiration, faces obstacles to reach it, then eventually concedes and stops all attempts to reach their ultimate goal, leaving them in a paralyzed state. This paralysis, shown by Joyce through the course of the Dubliners, expresses the inability for characters to change their lives and reverse the routines that hamper their desires. In Araby and Eveline the theme of paralysis is vividly evident and it is shown through the dull, everyday life in Dublin; the characters’ need for escape from their lives; and the eventual failed attempt to change their lives. In both Araby and Eveline, the settings show the theme of paralysis.

A major agent of the paralysis is Catholicism and thus, religion. Religion bogs down Dubliners, keeping them from advancement and allowing the continuation of a paralyzing routine. Joyce enlightens the reader of these problems through the use of the Catholic virtues. Dublin’s observance of Faith, Hope and Fortitude, and the non-observance of Temperance and Justice are symbolized by the characters and their actions in Dubliners.
