Introduction:

In whatever form it presents itself, child abuse and neglect is a large problem that

exists in society and seems unable to be remedied. Although society at large seems un-

aware of, or unconcerned about the problem, society is enormously affected by this

growing affliction.

In the book Understanding Child Abuse and Neglect (1993), the U.S. Advisory

Board calls this problem “an epidemic in American society, one that requires a critical

national emergency response” (p. 42).

Educators, doctors, and other professionals need to be educated on the subject as

well as do parents. More programs that would educate, heighten the awareness of child

abuse, and guide the lay person as well as the professional in dealing with children of

abuse, are needed. There are certain organizations that do just that. It is the hope of these

organizations to develop more efficient protective services for the victims of child abuse.

Though it is their hope to reunite or preserve a family, the child’s heath and well-

being are tantamount (National Research Council, 1993, p.42).

So many other news events and situations are getting either spread around the

internet, or carried far by media or word of mouth. It’s unfortunate that the social

problem of child abuse and neglect doesn’t seem to travel as far in the news. That is why

certain federally funded research programs have been developed.
