Child Abuse in America
Child abuse has become a national tragedy that must be stopped. First, this disease must be understood before it can be fought. Secondly, by understanding why this abuse is occurring a plan can be put into action to help prevent more child from this disease. The effects of abuse are changing these children’s lives and the long term influences can and are different for each and every victim. Everyone as a society must come together to fight this battle.
The term child abuse has different meaning for almost everyone. Experts agree that laws define it the best ( Flowers, 1986). The finding from these studies, place the abuse into eight different models that explain each type (Flowers, 1986). Each model broke down in detail, the types of abuse and the mistreatment of the children. The number of incidents from this disease can only been estimated because there are no accurate ways to determine how many cases go unreported (Kinnear, 1995). The estimates come from reported crimes not convictions (Kinnear, 1995). These crimes are usually committed by a trusted person that the child knows (Kinnear, 1995 & Flowers, 1986). In most crimes, a criminal profile can’t help establish characteristics to look for. Researchers have done many studies and statistics and can’t find any common denominators (Flowers, 1986). There are no clear cut factors that point to a particular group of people that commit or will commit child abuse.
Adults who have been victims of child abuse have been linked to committing domestic violence in their adulthood (“The Link”, 1994). The statistics show that child abuse occurs fifteen times more in households where domestic violence occurs (“The Link”, 1994). When children hear parents fighting they will try...
