Everybody has forces influencing their attitude and behaviors in life. These forces can be reduced by education. For the majority of my life my parents and peers have influenced my attitude and behaviors. Though these are the more obvious influences in my life, other things can be responsible as well. My education, especially in college, is helping to free me from these forces that have influenced me thus far. By examining the things responsible for shaping my views, I can begin to look at how my education will free me from my oblivious narrow-mindedness.
Up until a certain point in my life the bulk of my decision making was actually being done by my parents. They helped shape me into the person I am today. They taught me how to behave and how to act around people. If I were ever to misbehave, I would be punished until I was conditioned not to behave that certain way. At an early age parents begin to shape the behavior of their children following their morals and beliefs. That is how my parent’s views are passed onto me. Though my parents influenced my decision making, they did not make every decision for me. Parents point their children in the right direction, and set up guidelines in hope that their child will make the right decision when the time comes. One could compare their childhood to Plato’s, “Allegory of the Cave”, by referring to the prisoners. Just like the one prisoner breaking free and discovering the new world behind him, I am being introduced to a new life, known as college. I am finally free of my parents and living a new independent life on my own. As with all new things I must learn and adjust in the beginning so that I can have a good academic career. The prisoner had to adjust to the light coming from the outside the first time he turned around. This being my first time away from home, I have to adjust to being independent. The people in the cave being restrained and forced to see only one way can be related to living...
