Perhaps the most infamous instances in the novel were when Royal had his way with Mattie by kissing her without warning and groping her bosom (119-120). Mattie never received that kind of attention from a boy, which caused her to go along with Royal’s advances. Also, Pa’s ultimatum, which stated that Mattie could not return to the Gokey farm if she left for college, forced Mattie to rethink her educational decision (168). Miss Emily Baxter, Mattie’s teacher was another character in the novel that had a life parallel to Mattie.
