Sarah Frenzel AC0310696 HS150 World Civilizations I 02_02 12/30/12 The Conquests of Alexander the Great In 336 B.C.E., while preparing to invade Asia, Philip II was assassinated. As his son and heir to the throne, Alexander became King. Now the ruler of Macedonia, it was up to him to continue his father’s work. “Along with the throne, the young king inherited his father’s daring plans for the conquest of China” (Craig, Graham,Kagan, Ozmant, Turner, 2009, p. 120). Although he was only twenty years old, Alexander was ready for the responsibility. He had received the finest education available and had already led an army of men to victory during the battle of Chaeronea. He had some success, but was almost defeated at the Battle of the Hydaspes. As always, Alexander was ready to move on to the next battle, but his troops were ready to return home. Sadly, many of them died from dehydration on the return trip.
