Josie is on scholarship at a posh Catholic school where it matters what her father does. Josie doesn’t know who her father is (until later on in the book) as she lives with her mum, Christine. All Josie knows is that her mother had her against her father’s wishes when she was in her late teens. Nonna Katia, Christine’s mother, interferes a lot with Josie and Christine’s lives. Josie’s father, Michael Andretti, comes back into Josie’s life with no idea that he had a daughter. When he finds out that Josie is his daughter, both him and Josie decide to have nothing to do with each other. At school Josie hangs out with her troublemaking friends, Sera, Anna and Lee. Josie has a crush on the school captain of their brother school, John Barton. She also meets Jacob Coote, the school captain from the local state school, who asks Josie out. Jacob and Josie seem completely wrong together but after a few disastrous dates they get together. While Josie is dating Jacob, John Barton starts having deep conversations with her about him suffering from depression. One day, after Josie getting into trouble at school for breaking a girl’s nose, she needs to be stopped from getting sued. She thought of someone, her father. Michael is a barrister so Josie decides to call him to get her out of the mess. He succeeds and they decide from there to start getting to know one another. Later on when Josie arrives at school she is met by the school captain, Ivy Lloyd, who is crying. “John Barton killed himself.” Josie breaks down completely and feels awful just as her HSC exams are starting for the year. She makes it through the funeral and exams with the help of Jacob, her mother, Nonna (who Josie finds a huge secret about) and also Michael
