Rewards should be simple to implement, easy to record, inexpensive, and nondisruptive (Levin & Nolan, 2000; Smith & Rivera, 1993). Reinforcers which are selected by students themselves are often more motivating than those selected for them (Alberto & Troutman, 2003; Smith & Rivera, 1993). A variety of positive reinforcers should be available over time to prevent rewards from losing their effectiveness or motivating properties (Jones & Jones, 1998). Several types of reinforcers can function as rewards, including social, activity/ privilege, and tangible reinforcers (Alberto & Troutman, 2003; Emmer, Evertson, & Worsham, 2003). (See Types of Criterion- Specific Rewards Chart at the end of this STAR Sheet) For learning new or reinforcing difficult skills, more intensive rewards such as tangible or material rewards may be warranted.

It was hypothesised that the participants who were able to take notes will remember more of the critical words than the participants who used mental repetition. There were 22 year 11 students used, 3 male, 19 female, all relatively the same age group (15-16 years). 50 words were read out to two groups, one group able to take notes, and the other not able to. The participants were then quizzed to see how many critical words (words starting with s) they could remember.

In Patrick O’Malley’s essay “More Testing, More Learning”, he claims that the only way to improve students’ learning is frequently test. Malley knows that many college professors only use midterms and finals to judging students abilities. As a result, many students feel stressful about the test, and they fail the test. So Malley proposes that professors need to give more frequent brief exams. In this way, students would learn more efficiently, study more regularly, and have less anxiety.
