He never backed down from a fight even if he knows he might die, such as when he fought the dragon he went into the fight even though he thought he would die. This proves that Beowulf is brave even in life threatening moments. Beowulf is a great king who won them many great battles and protects them. He was a very generous and powerful king. Even though he was the king he still went to go fight the dragon.
Beowulf went off to fight this dragon all my his self with just a sword and a shield. In the end he defeated the dragon but also lost his life. The defeat shows the great strength that Beowulf has even as an old man. This also goes back to the quality of being brave. He shows braveness in this fight because he tells everyone that this is his fight and no one else should help him, which no one did.
He shows his confidence in his fighting abilities by fighting Grendel unarmed. Beowulf feels that it is unfair if he fights Grendel with weapons, when Grendel did not have any. Beowulf, translated by Burton Raffel, portrays Beowulf as an archetypical hero. Beowulf goes on an epic quest risking death for glory which is a definite trait of Archetypical heroes. Other traits furthering this claim include his inhuman strength and compassion for other humans feeling the need to save them. Beowulf is a brave fearless leader and has inhuman strength, “greater and stronger than anyone anywhere in this world” (lines 110-111). “Death was my errand and the fate they had earned” (lines 168-169), meaning Beowulf believed it to be his duty to kill and rid the world of evil, and that the evil he faced got what they deserve, which is death by him.

He made his kingdom overpowered, and built a name for himself and his people, which is a very brave and hard thing to do. First off, he ruled his kingdom Macedonia, well and helped it by making the right choices for his empire. Also, he fought in many wars with such bravery to prove himself worthy and determined to be known as “The Great”.

However, that doesn’t represent a hero so Beowulf knowing he might not make it back, knows he must fight and he “feels no shame, with shield and sword” (101, 2517-2520). This shows he isn’t even fighting for glory; he is fighting because he knows he must end this dragon’s life before his is ended. He fights for his people, for what is right, and nothing else. Beowulf is an epic hero because he represents himself with the characteristics of supernatural strength, courage and the will to fight for what’s right. There is no possible way Beowulf will be forgotten and his legacy will carry on throughout time and his tale will live on
Again, he has no logical reason to want or need to fight the dragon, but he does it simply to be a hero and to keep his reputation of a warrior. He even states, “I am old, now, but I will fight again, seek fame still” (Raffel 101). Beowulf only wants to fight to prove himself as a hero yet again. However this time, the risk is too great and he ends up getting killed in the fight. But, he died a hero so he had no regrets.
The story states, “I’ve never known fear, as a youth I fought in endless battles. I m old, now, but I will fight again, seek fame still, if the dragon hiding in his towers dares to face me.” This matters because even though he’s older now, he’s determined and optimistic about fighting whoever he’d have to fight, whenever he’d have to fight
