Noel Mendez Mendez 1 Mrs. Hinton English 3Period 2 August 31, 2012 Epic Hero Beowulf achieved many quest of tremendous value to himself and society. In the Epic From Beowulf translated by Burton Raffel, Beowulf did something that many people aren’t capable of doing. Beowulf proves to be a man of courage, leadership, and power and he can fit the image of an Epic hero in many ways. Beowulf was considered courageous during his lifetime because of everything he accomplished. Beowulf shows bravery in line 158 “… Death was errand.” He states that he will fight to his death. He will not back up from his fight with Grendel even if it might cost him his life. Beowulf also shows courage in line 154 “… I drove five great giants into chains.” By Beowulf’s statement he shows how he is not afraid of fighting anyone. Beowulf shows courage which makes him fit the image of an epic hero. Beowulf is also considered to be a leader. We can see in line 84 that Beowulf is a leader because he states, “All of Beowulf’s band.” This puts him on top of everybody else. It shows that Beowulf is the leader of the group and he has a say on everything that is going on. Beowulf also shows courage when he states him and his men will take care of…show more content…
We can see that Beowulf shows courage when he is going to go fight Grendel. Beowulf gains leadership when he leads his men to victory over Grendle. He shows that he has power because he defeated a monster that nobody could defeat. Although Beowulf was undefeated, he came back one hundred years later to fight a dragon, but he failed and died. This can relate to many people in our society. For example in the movie Batman, Batman had taken care of every bad guy in his city, but then eight years later he comes back to fight Bain and loses the fight.
