Therefore, aggressive behaviour with other children would be expected, because the child’s parents have failed to form a stable mother-child relationship in his home environment. Infants, like Calum and his sister, who are malnourished may also experience a condition known as ‘non-organic failure to thrive’. This refers to the child’s weight, height and development falling significantly below age-appropriate ranges, without apparent organic cause. Even with treatment, the long-term consequences can include continued growth problems, retardation and socio-emotional deficits (Wallace, 1996). All these factors will have combined to make Calum that which he has become.
There seems to be a misconception when it comes to older foster children, some of them do have emotional problems but when we look around us, with open eyes we will notice that many people have some type of emotional problem, they just are not labeled. Being moved from house to house is a very upsetting thing. If the child and foster parent cannot communicate it can cause distrust and placement issues (Crum, 2010, p. 1par 3). Many of the kids come from a neglected or abused home life so stability would be relief. The longer one is in foster care the harder it is to adjust unless you are in one home.
Environment 14 up wards At this age if a child has not been able to move away from poverty area then their life will be fighting to improve it on little money and a lot of hope At this age the lack of parents input can course problems, emotionally and they don't always understand how money works as they have always been given it. Most would rather have parents love then money. Restricted environment can stop children becoming all they can be and cause disruptive and emotional behavioural outbursts or go the other way and can close inside them
Poverty can result from low income, unemployment, parental separation, illness or disability, addictions or criminal activities, all of which can lead to children suffering from malnutrition or poor diet as a result of not being able to afford quality food, which could result in lack of concentration or poor performance in school. They could suffer from other health related issues, which could limit opportunities and influence the child's outcome in life. They could get bullied as a result of their clothing or because they do not have the latest must have accessories. Children who
If a parent is always stressed and worried there child will sense this and not feel as loved as a parent who is more warm and comforting. This does not mean that a parent doesn’t love their child but the way they are each emotionally will have an effect on their level of attachment. A child’s temperament can be shown at a very young age you will see this in the child’s level of activity, emotionally and socially. If a child is always upset and crying when they are at daycare or with a caregiver this will also affect their level of attachment it will be much harder for that child to be cared for and the love and comfort a child needs will not meet as the child’s temperament is affecting this attempt for attachment. A child’s temperament can affect a child's choice of activities and environments.
They fear abandonment. They fear loss. They draw an inescapable conclusion: Relationships have a high likelihood of being untrustworthy; betrayal and infidelity are probable" (Blakeslee & Wallerstein, 1989) Being a child in the foster care system can also have lasting affects on children. When children are placed in foster care, if the care that is given to them is inconsistent, or not enough care and attention is given, children become more insecurely attached, and develop abnormal attachment
Most of these children have parents who work, but low wages and unstable employment leave their families struggling to make ends meet. Poverty can impede children’s ability to learn and contribute to social, emotional, and behavioral problems. Poverty also can contribute to poor health and mental health. Risks are greatest for children who experience poverty when they are young and/or experience deep and persistent poverty. (“nccp.org,” 2010) When children grow up in poverty most lack the insurance they need to get the proper health care that they need.
Emotional needs of children need to be met ‘neglect can occur when parents abandon the child, or simply have no time to spend with the child, in essence leaving the child to raise himself’ (http://www.minddisorders.com/Kau-Nu/Neglect.html) see appendix …. Neglect can affect the child’s development. An example of how neglect can affect a child’s health is poor nutrition, if the correct nutrients are not are not available to children the child’s growth development will not follow the normal pattern and developmental stages will be delayed. ‘Common physical and psychological reactions to neglect include stunted growth, chronic medical problems, inadequate bone and muscle growth, and lack of neurological development that negatively affects normal brain functioning and information processing.’ (http://www.minddisorders.com/Kau-Nu/Neglect.html#ixzz2HxRH2n98) see appendix …. This negativity affecting the brain can make processing problems difficult for the child understand social relationships or harder for the child to complete academic tasks without assistance or intervention from others.
My definition of a dysfunctional family is one when there is malfunction; when the parents don’t meet the basic emotional needs for their children. The lack of emotional guidance from parents help contribute to the lack of social activeness for these children. It was not until I interacted with others that I soon realized the social effects of my upbringing. Statistically, being a part of a dysfunctional family, I was to grow up socially awkward and at a disadvantage with my social life. The naked truth behind the statistics my sister would continuously inform me of began to reflect me more as I would grow older.
Family can have a big effect on a child’s development for example if the child is an only child he / she will not know how to socialise with other children. If the child has a parent who has a long term illness then he / she is likely to spend a lot of time alone, so he / she would be withdrawn and `hang back` from many activities, also this child probably would spend most of his / her time indoors and their physical development might be delayed. If the child is abused or neglected he / she might be afraid of adults or children that are loud and this could affect all areas of development as the child would not be able to concentrate. Poverty can affect children`s development as children who are in poverty, would get less opportunities, as their family will not be able to afford to buy books, pens, puzzles and sports equipment. Also if the family cannot afford to buy enough food, the child might have trouble concentrating and absorbing information.
