Howard Community College Text: Insel, P.M. & Roth , W.T., Core Concepts in Health, brief, 12th ed Brief Edition Course Description: Personal and Community Health is a three-credit survey course designed to explore current health issues and topics. Emphasis will be placed on the behavioral aspect of health and wellbeing, helping students to personalize their own health behaviors and practices. Evaluation: Exams: Three unit exams will be given at announced times during the semester. The format of each exam will be multiple choice, true/false, and short answer. Exam questions will be developed from the learning objectives of each completed unit. Each exam accounts for 100 points. Please Note: Exams are the property of the instructor. Leaving the classroom with either the exam and/or scantron sheet will result in the student receiving a zero (0) on the exam. Community Service Learning Project: As a means to apply the theory of wellness, students will provide a minimum of 12 service learning hours to a partnering community agency. Students will be provided assistance in site selection, development of project goals and objectives, and guidelines for reflective writing assignments. Students will have the opportunity to share their experience through an in-class demonstration. Detailed information regarding this assignment will be fully discussed in class. Make-up exams must be arranged with the instructor prior to the next scheduled class. Failure to do so will result in a zero (0) for that exam. Make up exams are only given for excused absences. Students may be asked to provide documentation to support their absence. Classroom Conduct: • Students are asked to please be considerate of their fellow classmates by arriving to class on time and remaining in the classroom for the entire class period. • Students who leave the classroom unexcused or exhibit disruptive or inattentive behavior while in class will be marked as absent from the class and may be asked to leave. • Cellular phones must be turned off prior to the beginning of class. Students who violate this policy via talking on the phone or texting will be counted as absent for that class period (Refer to attendance policy above). Exceptions to this policy must be prearranged with the instructor. • Laptop computer use is not permitted in the classroom unless prearranged with the instructor. • Please consult the 2011-2012 HCC Catalogue and the Student Handbook for further information regarding standards of classroom behavior and student
