How does Macbeth change between Act 1 Scene 3 & Act 3 Scene 1? In Act 1 Scene 3 Macbeth says to his best friend Banquo “Your children shall be kings” and it seems that he is happy for them both. He discussed the events of the day and appeared to respect Banquo's opinions. They then had part of the witches prophecy confirmed by Ross saying “He bade me, from him, call thee thane of Cawdor.” Now Macbeth begins to believe that everything the witches predicted would come true, “Two truths are told, As happy prologues to the swelling act, Of the imperial theme.” He begins to believe he will be king. In Act 2, Macbeth has set his mind on what he wants to do and goes after it, "I have done the deed. Didst thou not hear a noise?" Macbeth has gone on with his plan to kill Duncan and take over Scotland. "Methought I heard a voice cry Sleep no more! To all the house.” Macbeth is paranoid because he has just killed Duncan and thinks someone is going to catch him and find out about his plans. He is frightened and feels that he has done a dreadful thing and knows he cannot change it. When Donalbain says to Macbeth, "Where we are, there's daggers in men's smiles," he means that someone in the castle knows what happened and no one can be trusted. Macbeth has started his evil plan and cannot turn back. In Act 3 Scene 1 Banquo accuses Macbeth of having got the royal title in an unfair way when he says, “Thou hast it now: king, Cawdor, Glamis, all, As the weird women promised, and I fear Thou played’st most foully for’t.” Now Banquo had accused Macbeth he felt he had to stop him from talking. As soon as Banquo leaves, Macbeth calls in hired murderers and convinces them to kill his friend by blaming Banquo for the bad things that have happened to the murderers in the past, “That it was he, in the times past, which held you.” He asks them if they are man enough to help Macbeth
