Importance of checking serial numbers when signing for a piece of equipment, especially military equipment, you must always check the serial number to make sure you are signing for the correct piece of equipment. Why must you do this you ask, it is because there are many other pieces of equipment that are identical to the piece you may be signing for. Not checking the serial number can cause mass confusion. If you do not check serial numbers you may have the wrong piece of equipment, You would most likely have a piece of equipment signed by someone else, now there are two pieces of military equipment that are not accountable for. Unaccountable items can send people on a time consuming goose chase for someone else s neglect of checking serial numbers. Same thing applies for checking on equipment that may be in a maintenance shop. Maintenance personnel must check serial numbers to make sure they are servicing the correct piece of equipment. Time is wasted on man hours and the equipment that was supposed to be serviced just went “X” amount of days longer not being serviced which is tracked and reported to higher. This type of complacency and neglect reflects on the individual and there chain of command. Something as simple as checking serial numbers does not take up a lot of time and in the end will keep from unnecessary headaches such as not knowing where your specific piece of equipment is and then tracking it down. Just think of what would happen if you never check the serial number after signing for a piece of equipment then finding out later that it is the wrong item. Now you have signed for and are responsible for an item that you have not inspected yet. Not to mention now you have to waste time tracking that item down and securing it. If it is a sensitive item that the serial number is neglected to be check and it is wrong and or missing. Not only will the
