Due to the daily humiliation faced by the ‘black man’ from the white people, the black men turned their frustration towards their women by beating them. The men are also sexually violent towards their women, as a result of their sexual desire or to make them feel more superior/dominant. The way the female characters react to their circumstances varies radically as there are a lot of ‘strong females’, unlike Celie. Walker explores the oppression that the black women experienced and uses Celie as an instrument to illustrate this. Throughout the majority of the book Walker shows sex to be seen as a form of aggression or something that the female is forced to submit to.
The Victorian sexual mores of that period meant that Jameson was only going for implication with female witnesses. With male witnesses, Jameson adopted a more direct approach, like when he forced Powell to admit that Celia did say that Newsom did force her to have sexual intercourse with him; and that no one was going to stop him. Interesting enough, Celia's fate may have been different if Newsom was exposed as a dominator with his daughters being totally submissive to him (McLaurin 98-99). While white men enjoyed patriarchal power in the antebellum South, white women on the other hand, held little power. White women had to accept slavery no matter what their opinion was.
Furthermore, sometimes raped black women it leads them to be stressful, depression and sometime death. Black men were unable to help or defend their women because they were slaves themselves, therefore they had no power which means they just have to see and do nothing about it. Davis describe the important information about how badly is the black women being treated. “Many white men, who began by taking a slave girl in an act of sexual exploitation ended by loving her and the children she bore” (Davis, 1981:25). This shows that black women were treated like animal and treasure just for having high number of children.
This is the issue that mostly bothered Jefferson, since he wanted the creation of a perfect society. The most important information derived from this secondary source was the ideologies that Jefferson had towards the Slaves and Native Americans. Jefferson believed these minorities were intellectually inferior and basically considered them a parasite and a libidinal race. To support my statement, I took this quote from the secondary source, “It must not allow its people to be “stained” and become a nation of mulattoes.” I found it very ironic at how Jefferson contradicts himself in several occasions, especially on this last quote because he himself had had children with his slave. Jefferson believes that slavery should be abolished because not only did it deprive the Black’s right to liberty, it also undermined the self control white men had to self republic.
After the Civil War, anti-slavery Republicans were alarmed by the promiscuity and rampant fatherlessness among ex-slaves, disastrous consequences of the institution's prohibition against slaves entering into marriage contracts. These abolitionists created the Freedmen's Bureau, in part as a federal marriage initiative: they wanted to encourage ex-slaves to marry and create stable families. Their aim wasn't primarily to ensure the civil right of blacks to enter into contracts of all sorts, including marriage; they believed, above all, that American-style marriage would help ex-slaves become responsible, self-reliant citizens who would rear responsible, self-reliant children. In light of this dual state concern—the rights of the couple and the promotion of self-governing families would mirror and sustain the republic (para.
It was said that rock ‘n’ roll posed a threat because black and white working class performers who had southern roots and dialects could be successful among the middle-class audience. This challenged the entertainment industry because they had to look for the next person that was going to be a hit. They went on to exploit small groups that would make them money, making sure they were gained control over rock ‘n’ rolls subculture style. They wanted to target the middle-class white people but instead they decided to take care of the more extreme aspects of the music. In my opinion I think Elvis was both an appropriator and transgressor.
The one positive that did come out of being a female in the antebellum south, was the deception of illness and pregnancy utilized by many females amongst the plantation. Females would say they were sick because of pregnancy; that would allow females to receive less work because masters cared about the new incoming beings that these slaves were going to reproduce. The masters cared greatly for the pregnant women, and female slaves understood that. Some masters became intelligent to the extent of how women were abusing the illness excuse, as a reason to lay off work. Masters gained methods that contained the facts of females would not be able to lay off unless their illness was accompanied by a fever (Ibid., 82).
They were very much racists and felt strongly about blacks marrying whites. But what they fail to realize is that love comes in all colors no matter what race. You can turn on your television right now and see all different types of interracial couples. Such as Kanye West and Kim Kardisan, Former Defense Secretary William Cohen has a black wife, as well as the Supreme Court justice Clarence Thomas has a white wife. “Even if people wanted interracially, I think they’d keep is kind of quiet” explained a minister on campus at Ole Miss.
They had they Master-Slave Relationships which is the relationships of the slave owners and their slaves had, the ways in which the owners treated slaves served ultimately to allow them to keep their slaves submissive, cooperative, and fearful to them that is why most of the were afraid of industrialization and urbanization because they were afraid that the slaves would run away. Some women were rape by the masters was used as a way in which to humiliate both the men and women, serving to belittle the women while leaving the men powerless to protect their women. When describing her experience, one former slave commented on the intense and relentless work schedule that the slaves kept and also there were different type of slave mention in the film. Slaves were often forced to work from sun up to sun down, oftentimes even beyond
African American female slaves were objectified as being mules, and that was justified by making them work harsh labor jobs. However, their sexuality and reproductive capacity brought another issue concerning only them. This was the submission of the master/slave relationship. African American female slave bodies were seen as sites of wild unrestrained sexuality and objects rather than human. Because of this misconception, African American female slaves went through forces of rape for the pleasure of their masters, and other times they would be engaged in rape with their masters for the purposes of the slave breeding more children for her master to have and use as slaves.
