The nominated Health and Safety Officer will, normally carry out, the risk assessment. Once a risk assessment has been carried out and the hazards have been identified, then a method statement can be developed which takes account of the identified hazards. The method statement should be read and understood by all members of staff and volunteers who are directly involved with supervising the children with that activity. Understand how to support children/ young people to assess and manage risk themselves. The most obvious method of supporting children to manage risk is by acting as a role model to the Health and Safety children whereby an adult demonstrates a good approach to risk management by adhering to the policy, and generally displaying best practise techniques that can be understood by the
The following guidelines should be followed to minimise risk of injury: Employers should give training on control measures and how to use them, provide protective clothing and equipment along with emergency procedures. COSHH requires employers to continually assess the risks from chemicals and decide what control is needed. They also need to ensure all staff use the control methods, that they work properly, inform workers about risks and provide adequate training. Children Act 1989 - The Children Act 1989 has influenced setting by bringing together several sets of guidance and provided the foundation for many of the standards practitioners adhere to and maintain when working with children. The Act requires that settings work together in the best interests of the child and that they form partnerships with parents and carers.
All staff will know what their job role involves and what other members of staff job roles are, this will make it more safe and secure for the children. 2.2 Identify policies and procedures in the work setting for information sharing? Data protection act 1998 is the legislation that settings base there confidentiality on to make sure information is shared properly. Staff will have follow procedures to make sure the policies are carried out correctly e.g. if you suspected a child was being abused you would tell your manager/
Staff should be taught to only extinguish trashcan-sized or smaller fires and to never put oneself in danger. Staff and children will be directed to an evacuation site outside the immediate area. Before leaving the daycare administration staff needs to take attendance to ensure that no one is left behind. Put your plan into action and post emergency numbers by the telephone. It helps to teach the older children to phone 9-1-1 in case you cannot do so or for them so seek help from other teachers or staff.
Task 1 links to learning outcome 1, assessment criteria 1.1 and 1.2. Write an explanation of: * what it means to have a duty of care in own work role * Duty of care is a legal obligation for an individual to adhere a standard of care to foresee any harm that my harm others * In my setting, we do a daily risk assessment inside and out to ensure the environment is safe to work in and children to learn in. My setting trains me for health and safety in food and hygiene to safe guard children from food poisoning, first aid training and equipment so I can attend to any incidents that may occur. I have to complete 2 accident forms one goes in file, sign by parent/carer to acknowledge that they have been informed, the other one goes to parent/carer to be informed of incident /accident. * Another accident form is filled out if a child arrives with an injury by parent/carer, or Practitioner if injury is found during session.
Unit 054 Outcome 1 1.1 Duty of care in my work role as a play worker is to ensure the safety of the children in my care by helping the child to develop as an individual and cope with any potential dangers they may face within the setting. I am to promote a healthy immune system by ensuring healthy food is available to the child. I am there to listen to the child, and learn to understand what the child wants and needs. 1.2 In my setting we have a duty of care to safeguard children, we do this by: • Completing risk assessments and implementing procedures to avoid potential hazards that could injure or harm the children. • All staff follow a set of rules for the setting where certain behaviours are not acceptable and we have strategies in place to discourage behaviour which may harm or distress others.
MU 2.4 Contribute to children and young people’s health and safety A/C 1.1 The health and safety policy of the work setting are: • To work towards preventing any occupational injuries and ill health to all staff and pupils • To make sure that no unacceptable risk is caused on the premises as a result of an activity • To always manage and encourage awareness of health and safety to all employees for their work and the environment of their work • To make sure that all people working within the setting are aware of the standards of the health and safety policy and work towards them • To look at and review the achievement of the health and safety objectives and to make any positive changes where they are needed to make sure they are met • To fully co-operate in the appointment of safety representatives and to provide the facilities and assistance which they need A/C 1.2 The lines of responsibility and reporting for health and safety in the workplace are; • Use safe methods of working • Use health and safety procedures and rules properly including in P.E and sport • Instruct others working with you in safe working practices • Inspect areas of work often and notify the person in charge of any concerns • Immediately take the correct action where it is necessary A/C 1.3 Risk assessment is a way of noticing and recording dangers and making suggestions to how they can be reduced. This is managed in the work setting by the manager. They will take out a risk assessment survey of the premises, method of work and all activities annually or more frequently if necessary. The survey will show any dangers and will identify the actions or risk control measures to be used to prevent them. The results of all risk assessment surveys will be reported to the health and safety sub-committee of the governing body.
Aim 4: Keeping children Safe from Crime Follow PSHE and Citizenship Policy which encourages independence, responsibility, confidence, positive self esteem, self awareness and respect. Aim 5: Protecting children’s Security Implement child protection policies and procedures working in partnership with pupils, parents and agencies. All staff members are aware of, monitor, comply with and discuss issues of health and safety continuously whilst working. When guiding visitors or parents/carers through the school we must also make them aware of health and safety pointing out fire exits in case of fire. Staff must attend training and always follow policies and procedures to ensure good practice.
Local authorities Within in my own work settings as well as all child services we have guidelines to go by to ensure and keep on improving the safeguarding of the children: Child protection Health and safety Going on outings Visitors entering the building Risk assessments e.g. for example before we outside for outside playtime a member of staff will go outside and fill in a risk assessment sheet to make sure the gate is locked and there is no harmful piece objects outside before they play. In a unfortunate case when a child has been seriously hurt or even died a inquires and serious case reviews are called, there is a set-up of professional services such as social services have to go by the legsistration policies and procedure’s . Sadly sometimes the policies and procedures fall through and it is
