Terry Malloy describes himself as a “bum” in the beginning of the movie On the Waterfront and then unconsciously desires self-respect. Edie Doyle represents innocence and purity and she has a positive impact on Terry. She makes him asses his self-worth and his role in Johnny Friendly’s gang, who he met through his only family Charley Malloy.
