Problems Facing Human Service Clients BSHS/305 03/15/2015 Barnett I will be explaining the different problems that are potentially facing human services clients and how the specific helping skills can be used with clients. There are a variety of issues a human service professional faces with their clients. These issues can range from substance abuse, mental or physical illness, grief, disabilities, caring for children and families, domestic violence, and many other issues. “The range of problems facing human service clients today can be identified in five ways and they are; developmental and situational problems, hierarchical needs, needs created by societal change, and environmental influences. Different skills are used when working with clients to properly assist them so that problems in living are resolved. Problems usually indicate something exists that is causing the client to experience trouble or discomfort” (Woodside, 2011). As a human services worker, you may assist with family crises such as loss of employment for example. This family that has suffered the loss may need assistance in several areas such as food assistance, medical expenses potentially even help with maintaining the household until income comes in. On the other side of this issue we need to make sure any children involved still have adequate care and housing making sure it is still in the child’s best interest to remain in the home until the issue is resolved. Additionally, a human service professional can also help provide information regarding parenting classes for the parents. Another problem a client may face is to find good childcare for their child. For instance, a client may have a job, but is unable to pay for daycare for their children due to bills and the amount of income they bring in. It is very important that early on, the human service worker gains their clients trust
