Everyone knows Hester because of the sin she committed and everyone knows her punishment, the letter A on her chest. She of course, does not like all this negative attention because it is affecting her lifestyle and the lifestyle of her child, Pearl. Early in the third chapter a man asks a townsman who Hester is. The townsman replies, “‘You must needs be a stranger in this region, friend, else you would surely have heard of Mistress Hester Prynne, and her evil doings’” (Hawthorne pg. 57).In the market place, people criticize Hester as she emerges from the prison door and makes her way to the scaffold to be publicly condemned.

The scarlet letter is one of the main symbols Hawthorne uses in the novel. The scarlet letter is an A, which stands for “adultery.” Hester wears this letter on her breast as a reminder of her sin. The letter is mentioned numerous times throughout the novel because it is a constant reminder to all the characters of what Hester had done. Hester feels guilty while she wears the scarlet letter because she knows she committed an immoral sin, and the townspeople scorn her for it. Reverend Dimmesdale also wears in A on his chest, since he too was a part of this sin.
Gabriel had a very sinful past, and he never forgave himself for the things he did wrong that he regrets. When Gabriel’s sister says, “I know you thinking at the bottom of your heart that if you just make her, her and her bastard boy, pay enough for her sin, your son won’t have to pay for yours. But I ain’t going to let you do that. You done made enough folks pay for sin, it’s time you started paying,” she makes it known to the reader that Gabriel has sins that he has not “paid for”. Because of this, he embodies an angry character, which he then takes out on the people around him, including his loved ones.

When his wife became sick he began to get emotions for her. He committed adultery with Abigail against his wife. First of all the nurse could prevented from all this tragedy, if she would just tell the both family what happened then, the two family would have arranged something and probably have a good relationship. This family did evil things when they saw Montague’s family. Every one saw Capulet’s family fighting all the time even the prince. This family was really unkind, they broke the law and did thing to the Montague’s family, harmless people and to the society. The reason they were so mean and breaking the law was that simply they just hated each other.
Now, with Kreon hearing the proof of what Antigone has done, he's angered more than ever. He wants to make her suffer, as if he's taking a chance he's always wanted. Towards the society, seeing women being faced with death and torture could turn them against Kreon, also for knowing Antigone was only doing so to protect her own
