Saving their Arms At one time or another, a young pitcher can experience what is known as a tired or stale arm. This happens in little league just as much, if not more often, that it happens in the major leagues. In youth baseball, pitchers are even more vulnerable, especially since little leaguers are playing more than one season and sometimes two leagues at the same time. There are a number of things we as coaches can do during the season that will assure longevity and fewer injuries to the arm. Loosening up is extremely important before a pitcher throws one pitch. Every player is different, but the manager should use some common sense when determining how many pitches are enough for a particular player. Several studies have been performed on this controversy by both sides, biased and non-biased. The overall consensus shows that pitch counts and pitching frequency is the number one cause of injury. Another issue facing the youth baseball pitcher is duel leagues or playing for his school and travel teams while practicing on their off days. It is extremely important for coaches and parents to coordinate with all his coaches and instructors on when they pitched last and how many pitches were thrown. A responsible set of coaches should have some sort of documentation logging innings and number of pitches. Parents should definitely get more involved with their kids regimen. Baseball seasons and different options are growing increasing in length at the youth level. All-Star games, travel teams, and the popularity of fall baseball all add up. There is potential for pitchers to do harm to their arms. Loosening up and stretching are a must. In today’s age, with technology, parents have access to many resources to help preserve the arms.
