The 21st century gave rise to the biggest leap in human communications history: the internet and instant communication technologies. Many discuss its harms and benefits brought to our world. Today, we examine the ‘for the better’ arguments from a deontologist and consequentialist view. ‘The ends justify the means’ is what a consequentialist would argue. Three main positive aspects are usually examined: economically, socially and politically. Economically, most would appraise how the instant messaging, real-time conversation and virtual media have helped connecting individuals, acquaintances and corporate all over the globe at zero-time and even zero-cost system. This encourages and facilitates multi-national trades and deals, thus upscaling the global markets and economies. Secondly, for social benefits, many argue on the increased accessibility of education thus narrowing the gaps between the rich and the poor. This leads to the elevation of class, living standards and subsequently the whole of society. Thirdly, many argue this has given rise to the ease of organising political movements. Twitter, Facebook and Weibo have often been utilised as the means of communications for rally all over the world. Recent example seen in the Umbrella Movement in Hong Kong, students from the UK, Sydney and Canada were able to organise forms of regional rallies in support of fighting for universal suffrage in Hong Kong.
