These attributes are seen as the keys to happiness and bypassing hard work. He impresses this shallow dream onto his son, Biff. Although Biff is both well liked and attractive, he cannot achieve Willy’s dream and, therefore, becomes disillusioned. This discrepancy between Willy’s dream and reality manifested through Biff enables readers to see its dangerous futility. Although the dream results in Willy’s demise, Biff is able to escape and develop his own dream that is realistically based on true individual happiness instead of superficial qualities.
Gatsby is a nostalgic person as he says to daisy ‘can’t repeat the past?'... 'Why of course you can!' This shows that he wishes for the relationship they once had when he was in the military. Daisy’s love is what motivates Gatsby to achieve his American dream and gain the wealth he needs. Gatsby would do anything to make someone happy.
Gatsby dedicates himself to achieving both money and love; he becomes overwhelmed with the desire for money, and is confident to win over the girl of his dreams. Gatsby symbolises the “American dream” as his dream starts off good but ends badly. According to Lewis, “The water here is both a life giving amnion, and a destroying force.” This implies that the dream is both good and bad, that it keeps us going but the dream also destroys us, which happens with Gatsby, he lives life completely oblivious as to what is really going on, but his high aspirations keep him going, his focus on the ‘Green light’ which Is Daisy’s dock, confident he will get there. Tom is from “old money” meaning he was born into a wealthy family and inherited it. Because of this, Tom is very shallow and has a rude personality. He does not care about other people as long as it does not affect him.
Men who wanted to have money to waste had to either work for it, or inherit it. In The Great Gatsby, both James Gatz and Nick Carraway are men who work in order to succeed. The two men vary in motive, method, and result, but Fitzgerald’s comparative language throughout the novel expresses the deep connection between the two characters as the novel develops. The problem with Jay Gatsby is his unwavering devotion to his platonic ideal. He believes that through hard work and determination, he will win Daisy back and restore her to her former glory.
Gatsby is presented in the book as a man living the happiest life, with plenty of friends, no problems, and an honest. Gatsby's illusion surrounding him is totally shattered, partly through the actions of Tom who feels that he must discredit his name. Tom discredits his name to draw Daisy away from him when he finds that Gatsby has become interested in Daisy.
For example he lets people that are complete strangers to him attend his parties. Gatsby resides in West Egg which contains people who have “New money”. Gatsby cares for Daisy more than Tom ever will but unfortunately Daisy still chooses Tom. Gatsby cried to Daisy “Can’t repeat the past?...
