Aromatherapy and Spa: Education, Treatments, and Employment Aromatherapy is the practice of using natural oils to enhance psychological and physical well being. Its practices have been known to help with many aliments including stress, depressing and arthritis. This type of therapy supposedly works by inhaling the aroma to help stimulate brain functions or absorb through the skin where it goes into the blood stream (Webring Inc. Aromatherapy at home, 2006). It is a natural way to heal the whole person and not just symptoms of a disease. It is designed to help the body use its natural ability to balance and heal itself. Aromatherapy is used in many settings from spas to hospitals. Its general function is meant to relieve pain, promote relaxation and mood. The smell of lavender for example is thought to soothe and comfort. Peppermint oil used by pregnant women has been said to help with nausea and vomiting (Natures gift Aromatherapy 2006). It has also been determined to help ease the pain of arthritis. Clary Sage has been linked to help one sleep, relieve pain and stimulate memory. Eucalyptus has been known to clear sinuses and increase alertness. Aromatherapy message uses some of the above essential oils as well as physical massage. A spa offers this type of therapy. Essential oils can be used to help relax one while the muscles are being rubbed by the act of inhaling a desired aroma. The oils can also be applied directly to the skin. The expectation is that the oil is going into the blood stream to help elevate a particular aliment. As mentioned above, sometimes peppermint is used in message therapy to help elevate pain.
