The direct and indirect cost totals more than $140 billion dollars annually. The United States spends six to 10 percent of healthcare on costs caused by obesity compared to 2 to 3.5 percent in other western countries (Schwarz & Peterson, 2010).

Chronic Disease Risk Assessment Essay I have recently taken the chronic disease risk assessment on our school website on diabetes. After completing the assessment and reading the assessment I was given some pretty good pointers about the situation we put our body in from bad eating habits. Diabetes being a high risk factors for anyone who is overweight or anyone who may have this terrible disease that has plagued people over the last few years. And I do mean plagued, it seems as obesity rises in percentages that so does diabetes. There are two different types of diabetes that the world population deals and suffers with.

Added to the health problems engendered by excess body weight is the social stigmatization faced by excessively overweight people, mainly young women and youngsters. A 2001 scientific study found “clear and consistent stigmatization, and in some cases discrimination….in three important areas of living: employment, education and healthcare” (Obese people suffer bias…). In addition, overweight and obese people are portrayed in a negative way in the media, including television and movies.
Body Image/Anorexia Up to 24 million people of all genders and ages have an eating disorder in the United States. Eating disorders develop from negative body image due to magazines and the fashion industry.The way magazines portray men and women lead to a bad body image and eventually leads to eating disorders in order to achieve the “perfect body”. Eating disorders - such as anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating disorder, include extreme emotions, attitudes, and behaviors towards weight and food issues. Eating disorders are serious emotional and physical problems that can have life-threatening consequences for males and females. Anorexia is the third most common chronic illness among adolescents,one in every 100 women have an eating disorder.
