CHILDHOOD OBESITY Asia Jackson ENGL 122 English Composition11 Jason Vinson December 17, 2012 Childhood obesity is an ongoing epidemic in the United States. Today in America every one and three children are obese. Obesity is defined as an excessively high amount of body fat in relation to lean body mass. Schwimmer, J.B., Burwinkle, T.M and Varni, J.W., (2003), Ch ildhood obesity is now the number 1 health concern among parents in the United States. Child obesity is a very serious matter. Every one out of three kids are consider obese. African American and Hispanic families have the highest numbers. Ones environmental factors promote obesity. Obese children are likely to contain any health problems then healthy children. Obese children are more prone to low self esteem, negative body image and depression. Excess weight at a young age has been linked to higher and earlier death rates in adulthood. When you look at it there are several reasons why children become obese. This is a very strong topic and conducting the right research will bring out the factors of why this occurs. Environmental factors promote obesity in today’s society. Reason being both parents are working so the child may not be receiving home cook meals. When families eat at different times that are not good, you should have a set time that you eat. Eating out to fast foods, and not eating healthy. In the community you have them building more corner store, liquor stores and fewer grocery stores. To me that’s not a good idea. That will attract a person’s attention and they will just spend their money on what’s not important. As an individual you may not have time to cook. For, example I know how to cook but never have to. I only cook on my off days that are only three days. So the other four days I eat out and that’s not good. I used to teach a nutrition class and have some knowledge about eating…show more content…
According to the American Academy of pediatrics states that children are getting less playtime, because of the no child left behind act. Research has shown that children engage in less physical activity in the summer and gain weight two to three times faster. Watching television can cause a big issue with childhood obesity. When children are viewing TV different commercials advertise unhealthy foods. When they see that it makes them want high and fatty foods. Some even cry for it. Parents don’t realize that they are hurting their children when they give them the lots of junk food. Some just don’t want to hear their children mouth. For each extra hour children spend watching TV children gained more than two extra pounds of body fat. Parents should engage in more physical activity with their children.
