Alexandria Edwards LIT 295-V1 Oct 14, 2011 Major Paper 2 The set of poems by Edna St.Vincent Millay are from an essay she wrote called Fatal Interview. These poems discuss the journey of a relationship between Millay and her previous love. The poems start out with a description of a brand new relationship. They are completely in love and it’s the type of love you only hear of in the old literature. The second poem goes into describing how their love is still there.
Larkin portrays this sense of objectification in his poem with regards to woman as he describes a woman as a ‘bosomy English rose’ and then follows on to call her ‘beautiful’ throughout the poem portraying the sexual lust involved with love. In Larkin’s poem the male would seem he is not bothered about the unfortunate break up between him and the girl he is dating as he avoids mentioning the facts of how their relationship ended and seemed pleased she returned what is believed to be an engagement ring. Abse on the other hand is describing the atmosphere of Valentines day where he does include a sense of sexual desire however he is still hoping to fall in love as he did once before. The position both characters are in are similar. In

The gentle fire is this: My lips, two blushing pilgrims, ready stand to smooth that rough touch with a tender kiss (II, ii, 33-36).” said Romeo to prove his love for Juliet though it was the first time the two met. When the two found out that Romeo is a Montague and that Juliet is a Capulet, Juliet vowed to Romeo and proclaimed “O Romeo, Romeo! Wherefore art thou Romeo? Deny thy father and refuse thy name; or if thou will not, be but sworn my love and I’ll no longer be a Capulet “(II, ii, 33-36).
The poem Anne Hathaway is a tribute to Shakespeare. It is written in the form of a sonnet – a traditional love poem. Duffy uses the character of Anne Hathaway to present a feeling of love. “The bed we loved in was a spinning world of forests, castles, torchlight, clifftops, seas where he would dive for pearls.” A deep feeling of love is conveyed metaphorically by comparing the couple’s bed to a romantic, fantasy world. All of the places mentioned are key settings for some of Shakespeare's most famous works, this shows how special Hathaway considers the couple's lovemaking.
She said that she would continue trading love in the autumn of life (moments of suffering) to keep the individual alive peacefully. The poet tries to explain that love is real & pure and life is nothing without love. She has compared a life without love with a fractured bone which is useless. She ends up saying that love is everything & life without love is nothing. Generally the love poem revolves around the feeling of love, the pain, the good & bad experiences in love & the ironies of being in love.
Idealized Love “When we fall in love, we believe our partner is irreplaceable. We have found the one who is perfect, just right for us. The act of falling in love, in a sense, means that we reject the notion that individuals are interchangeable” (Gianotti). In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, The Great Gatsby, idealized love strongly motivates the key characters Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan. While their journey together begins as a brief fling, the two are soon engrossed in a lifelong relationship filled with undying affection and enduring regrets.
Paris's love for Juliet is true love on his side but it is unrequited - he admires her from a distance and cares for her and he says when she 'dies' they he will come to the tomb and cover her grave with fresh flowers every day. Although the love Romeo and Juliet share is ‘love at first sight’, as the play progresses Juliet's love for Romeo develops into true romantic love - she loves him despite him being a Montague. However, even this kind of love results in being unrequited, as both die for their love at the end of the
She tells him that pilgrims do have lips, but lips that they must pray with, not kiss with. Eventually, Juliet gives in and kisses him. This is very important because it is where the 2 lovers first meet, on Sunday evening. The 2nd most influential event happens Sunday night. This is the famous Balcony Scene, where Romeo and Juliet declare their undying love towards one another.
To begin with romantic love is lustful. In Act one scene five page 19 when Romeo first sees Juliet at the Capulet party, the first thing he talks about is her beauty. He says “O, she doth teach the torches to burn bright”, when only a few minutes before he was lovesick over Rosaline. This makes Romeo’s love for Juliet unrealistic. Also in act two scene one page 30 Juliet tells Romeo if he really loves her that they will marry.
One story is what we would call “Romance Literature” and the other one is more “Realism”, in one the characters names are given and the other they just go by “the husband” and “the wife.” The way both male characters express their feeling or love to their wives is completely different from each other, although they both do love them like crazy. The story by van der Zee is romance literature because of the intimate scenes and it has a happy ending, because Faye lives happily ever after with the love of her life “Kai”, after all they have been through. I believe the name Faye is a very pretty name and that has something to do why van der Zee used it in a romance story. Unlike A Secret Sorrow, in A Sorrowful Woman the characters names are not given and there are no scenes were “the husband” and “the wife” are intimate. In this story the wife seems to not be happy with her family and ends up dying at the end.
