Discuss the relationship between stress, anxiety, habits and phobias and describe how you would treat these issues with hypnotherapy The treatment of stress, anxiety, habits and phobias are very popular requests amongst hypnotherapy. An understanding of the relationship between these disorders and examining the similarities and differences between each allows therapists to distinguish what type of treatment will be most accurate as well as effective. Each of the disorders are discussed in this essay, with mention of any relationships and the considerations that need to be made in the treatment plans. All the disorders: Stress, anxiety, habits and phobias share common ground and can all be related to one another in some form. For example they all are caused by fear and change or even fear of change. A habit can cause stress, such as trying to stop smoking. A phobia may cause stress and anxiety, for instance if an individual has a phobia of rats, they may become stressed and anxious, until someone removes the rat. Fear is always the reason for stress. The subconscious mind is our survival mechanism; it will automatically create our fight or flight in motion. Although we are mainly discussing the ill effects of stress, we also need a certain amount in our lives in order for us to perform correctly, or individuals would not be motivated to do anything. However chronic stress that occurs when a person is under constant stress over a long period of time is responsible for many emotional and physical difficulties. The term "stress", as it is currently used was coined by Hans Selye in 1936, who defined the function as "the non-specific response of the body to any demand for change". It can also be defined as a negative emotional experience resulting from a person feeling a mismatch between the environment and their ability to cope with that environment. A
