Examine the patterns of, and reasons for, domestic violence in society (24 marks.) Domestic violence against women by men is 'caused' by the misuse of power and control within a context of male privilege. Male privilege operates on an individual level to maintain a situation of male dominance, where men have power over women and children. Offenders of domestic violence choose to behave abusively to get what they want and gain control. Their behavior often comes from a sense of entitlement which is often supported by sexist, racist, homophobic and other discriminatory attitudes. In this way, domestic violence by men against women can be seen as a consequence of the inequalities between men and women, rooted in patriarchal societies that encourage men to believe they are entitled to power and control over their partners. Domestic violence is mental, physical and emotional violence that occur around the world in any type of family household. Even though its thrown up in society there are individuals that are able to continue with their violent actions. Catriona MirrlesBlack’s (1999.) survey showed 6.6 million domestic assaults in just a year and a half, resulting in physical injury proved it was a real problem and a clear pattern for domestic violence. However this does not apply to just woman this also includes men, children, youth, elderly people (as they are unable to protect themselves as much.), people struggling with financial difficulties, (stress and the worries of everyday life.) According to Kathryn Coleman (2007.) main violence occurs in males, as they are more capable also physically and willing to act up on domestic violence; to put women ‘back into her place. ‘This is because the change in equality, including employment and childcare.
