Explore how Steinbeck uses animal imagery in the character of Lennie in Of Mice and Men.* Animal imagery forms a large part of the novella in Mice and Men. Steinbeck likes to add to the realism of his plot by description. He uses imagery as one of his tools to create this realism. Lennie is made a more believable character by Steinbeck comparing him to a bear. Ironically lennies name was Lennie Small but he was far from this. ‘He walked heavily, dragging his feet a little, the way a bear drags his paws’. This gives Lennie the actions of a bear , making him walk and act like a bear. His hands are referred to as ‘paws’ to signify size and strength. ‘Lennie dabbled his big paw in the water’. This gives the reader the impression that lennie is slow, cumbersome , strong yet awkward. Steinbeck also describes Lennies actions as animal like. Lennie ‘snorted into the water like a horse…’ . He isn’t educated or refined, but rough and ready , showing animal like tendencies. These characteristics sum up the character of Lennie. He uses these hands to stoke soft things like a mouse but because of his awkwardness he kills the mouse, although he protests at George“I didn’t kill it”. Because of his simple mindedness, he does not realise his own strength and power. The animal imagery is used again when Steinbeck shows how Lennie reacted to Georges discovery of the dead mouse.Slowly, like a terrier who doesn't want to bring a ball to its master,Lennie approached, drew back, approached again. George snapped his fingers sharply, and at the sound Lennie laid the mouse in his hand’ The animal imagery is used again by George when he describes Lennie on their arrival at the ranch as ‘As strong as a bull’ . This image conveys the idea that lennie would be a useful person to have on the ranch as his strength was important to do the job of a ranch hand. .These same hands Lennie
