The movie is based on Ntozake Shange's 1975 play "For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf." Each of the women portrays one of the characters represented in the collection of twenty poems. Each of the poems deal with intense issues that particularly impact women in a thought-provoking commentary on what it means to be a female of color in the world.

Girls Like Us The Girls Like Us Documentary shows four girls all with different families, different religious beliefs and ethnic backgrounds. During the movie the interviewer asks them about their goals and lives when they are around ages 14-17. They movie starts when they are around 14 and every year they check back in for four years to show the changes in personality as well as in their beliefs and goals. The cast De'Yonna Moore is African-American with strong goals who lives with her Grandma, Lisa Bronca is a Caucasion Catholic who attends an all-girl catholic school, Anna Chau is Vietnames with very strict parents and good beliefs, and Raelene Cox is a young white girl who comes from a broken home with a not so involved mother. I think that the main point of the movie Girls Like Us was to show examples of how different lifestyles could have an impact on young girls growing up today.
