The problem identified in my nursing situation was a concern of safety for patients in the emergency department who are admitted under the Baker Act. By law, the emergency department is required to hold these clients until medically cleared by a physician. However, this waiting time is often longer than can be expected and due to the laws of the Baker Act, the patient is held against their will until evaluated by a psychiatrist.
