It was under the leadership of Alice Paul. In order to convince President Wilson and Congress to pass a woman suffrage movement, they had to undertake radical actions. In 1920, due to the combine efforts of the NAWSA and the NWP the 19th Amendment was ratified. It gave women the right to vote. This victory was considered the greatest achievement by women in the Progressive Era.
For years these women worked hard as activists for women’s rights and in August of 1920 the 19th Amendment guaranteed women the right to vote. The amendment stated that, ““The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex” and “Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.””(history.com) Eastman wrote her article, “Now We Can Begin” in 1920 to show her audience that not only did women just win the right to vote but now women had a voice that could be and would be heard. In the early 16th century, the Protestant Reformation divided the unity of the Roman Catholic Church. The Reformation movement began in Germany led by Martin Luther. His speeches and writings were passed on all over Europe with the help of the printing press. It started in response to the rising sense of corruption in the church. For instance, “the sale of indulgences for the benefit of the church of Rome specifically for the rebuilding of St. Peters Cathedral provoked harsh criticism, especially by those who saw the luxuries of the papacy as a betrayal of apostolic ideals ” (Fiero 119).
Alice Paul Alice Paul did a lot for women by challenging the law to get equal rights for women. She protested like no one else ever had, was chairman in the National American Women’s Suffrage Association (NAWSA), and founded the National Women’s Party (NWP). Alice Paul even fought for her rights in prison; she is a very important part in women’s history. If it wasn’t for the things Alice Paul did for women we probably would not have the equal rights we have today. She even worked very hard to write the Equal Rights Amendment.

Sarah Grimke spoke with a concise confidence responding to a newspaper, “All I ask of our brethren is that they will take their feet from our necks, and permit us to stand upright on the ground which God has designed us to occupy.” (Chafe 25) “[Also Grimke wrote that] like blacks women were ‘accused of mental inferiority’ and were refused the opportunity for a decent education. Bainton (1894–1984) was born in England and came to the United States in 1902. Dr. Bainton was a specialist in Reformation history and for many years he was Titus Street Professor of Ecclesiastical History at Yale University.

Anthony fought for over 50 years advocating for the social and legal quality for women. Anthony co-founded the National Woman’s Suffrage Association with fellow feminist, Elizabeth Cady Stanton. Susan B. Anthony was an important symbol of equality. Her efforts of selfless dedication played a major role in the ratification of the 14th amendment of the United States Constitution giving women the right to vote in 1920.
Martin Luther played a vital role in the start of the Reformation, his actions from 1517 allowed people to start forming their own opinions on religion and the church. Between 1517 and 1522 Martin Luther wa pivotal in the course of the Reformation. On the 31st October 1517 Martin Luther nailed the 95 Theses on a door of All Saint’s Church in Wittenburg, provoked by indulgences sold by John Tetzel in villages around Germany; he was selling to relatives of people who had died. This money was needed in order to pay back debts to the Fugger bank for buying Albrecht of Brandenburg third bishopric and to build St Peter’s Church. This Theses was addressed to Pope Leo X, who was building St Peter’s.
Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton gather women together and fought for their rights. They deserved to vote just like men did. They needed to prove themselves. To get their message across they formed the National Women Suffrage Association, in May 1869. This was an organization made up of only women.
