LN-1.0.1 ETHICS AND LEADERSHIP EFFECTIVENESS: Joanne B. Ciulla Ethics and morals are synonyms though ethics is about social values and morals is about personal values. Contemporary books and journals has reviewed little work on ethics and leadership and a combine work from philosophy and social sciences will bring better understanding of leadership which has been a problem. Consequently, understanding from humanities blended with description and explanation from the sciences will help. Ethics is treated as exhortation. It has been difficult to standardize the definition of leadership. Its definition has been base on the nature of leader/follower relationship and time of leadership. The best definition is the one showing non-coercive, participatory and democracy. Leadership is not determining by formal position. All attempts to define what a leadership is always end up being what a good leadership is. Some leaders are ethical but not lucky and vice versa. Ethics is effectiveness in certain instances. Deontological and teleological theories have resemblance with ethics and effectiveness. Deontological locate ethics in the action of moral intent while teleological locate ethics in the action of result of the leader. Altruism is a motive for acting, but not a normative principle. Being a leader is not in a just person’s self-interest but to guide, and look after the goals, missions, and aspirations of groups, etc. Transforming and transactional leadership gives ethical leadership. Transformational and charismatic leadership theories are questionable. Most successful leaders suffers the worse ethical failure, self- control is the solution.
