Contemporary Problems HSM/210 - HUMAN SERVICES IN THE UNITED STATES March 14, 2013 In Collier County there is a great need of early learning opportunities for children of low income families, caused by the lack of funding and limited centers with proper accreditation. Children in Collier County need to participate in these programs in order to be ready for kindergarten as well as to create a strong learning base for their future studies. There should be more restrictions for early learning centers that want to open up their doors, to make sure they are teaching the children correctly. Currently they provide programs to help the children that have suffered abuse and/or have been neglected by their parents. In conjunction with The Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida they offer free specialized group parenting classes to teach parents how to focus on their strengths and set appropriate expectations for their children. Another agency helping the children is the Hunger and Homeless Coalition of Collier County they are working with different institutions like S.T Matthew’s House. S.T Matthews House has been helping families since 1989. In 1989 its doors opened to 18 single men at one site. Today 170 beds at several sites in Naples and Immokalee give shelter to some 2,000 persons annually. St. Matthew’s House relies on the generosity of grant making organizations, individual donors, private foundations, churches, and civic organizations to fund its programs (St. Matthew's House, 2010). They operate an apartment complex to help a variety of families and single people in need. The Hunger And Homeless Coalition Of Collier County (December 2011) website say that Collier County Hunger & Homeless Coalition has developed a plan called 20/20 Vision to prevent and end homelessness in Collier County. The ten year plan will address the needs of the different entities that are helping the homeless. One of limitations experienced at present is the difficulty in sustaining communication among agencies. They plan to create a single network system between the agencies to share accurate information about the services provided. This information needs to be prepared and edited by the agencies rather than rely on word-of-mouth, as much time is taken up in redirecting questions to other agencies.
