"Ignorance is never better than knowledge." This is an incredibly powerful statement explaining the difference between real knowledge and pure unawareness to a subject. Laura Fermi produced an exceedingly true quote about facts versus thinking you know the facts. Two authors displayed this idea throughout two very famous books. "The Crucible", written by Arthur Miller, and "The Scarlet Letter", written by Nathaniel Hawthorne. The first novel, "The Crucible" exemplifies the quote "Ignorance is never better than knowledge", through Puritan beliefs. Almost everyone in "The Crucible" was of the Puritan religion and they were large believers in witchcraft. In the story, one of the main characters, Reverend Parris catches a group of girls dancing in the woods, which is against the Puritan religion. Everyone then finds out about the incident, and thinks they are all criminals of witchcraft. The controversy with this belief, is that everyone does not know all the facts. In this time period in general, random people would be taken into the "witch trials" to see if they would be accused of witchcraft. This justifies the quote because none of the people taken into the witch trials were actually "witches", everyone just thought they were. A similar theme is shown in the second novel, "The Scarlet Letter" by Nathaniel Hawthorne. "The Scarlet Letter" is set in the Puritan times as well. The main character, Hester has committed adultery and they make her wear the scarlet letter, the "A" on her chest so everyone knows that she committed the crime. Also, she is guilty of ignorance as well. She thought that everything
