Abigail is a very dishonourable person. She lies throughout the whole play. She lies to save herself, but by doing this she has no personal integrity. She would rather see others suffer than be true to herself and others. Elizabeth is a very honourable person, however that all changes when she lies to the court.
Proctor calls Abigail a whore, and is immediately shut down by everyone. The majority of the crowd does not believe Proctor even though he is right. If the majority of people believe a statement that does not mean it is true. The world in The Crucible is clearly divided into these two camps. Unfortunately, everybody’s confused about which side is actually good, and which side is actually evil, though it’s abundantly clear to the reader.
The Crucibles The crucibles is like desperation, lies, and hopelessness. Arthur Miller uses Rebecca Nurse to shows us that she is the clear martyr in the play, the most pure and saintly character hanged for witchery. Rebecca Nurse in the Crucibles uses integrity has always been scarce in society. In today’s world and as shown in The Crucible, honesty is unappreciated and the truthful are punished. While this brings fear to all of Salem, one character stands by her beliefs until the death.
To keep themselves out of trouble the girls said other women in the community were practicing witchcraft. The girls chose various names and for no particular reason on who they chose to blame for practicing witchcraft. Most of the accused were women, and to get them to confess to witchcraft different types of torture were used. No one came forward to defend these individuals and although they were innocent, often times the torture would be so immense they had no choice but to confess and say they were indeed a witch. The individuals who were accused had two options; one was to plead guilty and live a shameful life, or they could plead not guilty and die a horrible death.
They saw it as going against the law of God making religion the bigger factor of why this person was in jail and why this person might be killed. This can be viewed similar to The Crucible. Religion was a big factor of why so many people were killed. The Salem government didn’t have any real explanation about why the girls were acting the way they were so they turned to religion to explain the unexplainable. They didn’t have any law at the time making it illegal to be a witch so they used religion or the law of God as an excuse to kill all those people.
In the Salem Witch Trials, Sarah Good, Sarah Osbourne and Tituba were the first three women to be accused of witchcraft for allegedly afflicting Betty Paris and Abigail Williams, two young girls, with a demonic disease. They had been accused of witchcraft out of rumors about their “outcast” natures and eccentricities by other girls and were sent to jail despite any tangible evidence of their alleged connection with witchcraft. A spread of accusations arose within Salem following their arrest, most of which had their basis in rumor rather than on concrete evidence. During the period of McCarthyism, Senator Joseph McCarthy accused two hundred and five people of being “card carrying” communists in a speech in Wheeling, Virginia. He accused government employees,
Up to now in this story it seems like half of the town has been accused of witchcraft, but it gets worse. Martha Corey was accused because she thought the town and everyone in the church was insane blaming all the innocent people for things that were out of their control. She also thought the girls they were listening to were fools and she thought they were even bigger fools for listening to children. She told the court that she was innocent; she didn’t know what a witch was. They simply told her that how could she not know if she was one if she didn’t know what a witch is.

In the book The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne, you see that her experience in the Puritan community was shameful, humiliating, and lonely. She was looked at as the good woman gone bad. Hester Prynne lived in a society where religion came first, so when she committed adultery, the Puritans had no compassion or understanding for her.
She is always the same mean, rude, and obnoxious character throughout the whole story. Just because her parents were murdered does not mean that she has the right to act the way she does. It is a just a partial reason or explanation for why she acts the way she
