Jan Freeman's Reading Analysis

During the 34th Annual Literary Festival last week I attended two events, the first one was with Jan Freeman and the other one was with Tim Seibles. Both authors preformed poetry readings in two very different styles. The settings of each were completely different as well. Jan Freeman’s reading was held at the Virginia Beach Higher Education Center in a comfortable atmosphere. Whereas Tim Siebles reading was held at the main Old Dominion Campus at the Chandler Recital Hall, which I found to be very hot and there were not enough seats available. The audience at both readings consisted mainly of college students, but the only difference was that at Tim Seibles’ reading there was more of an older generation present. Jan Freeman’s reading was in a temperature controlled room, there were plenty seats available, and food was also present. The atmosphere would make it easier to enjoy the poetry readings. Then at Tim Sieble’s reading it was hot and there were not enough seats for everyone to sit. I found myself standing in what had to be the hottest corner of the room. Even when I looked around people were leaving the reading because of the uncomfortable atmosphere. However, just because the environment was far more satisfying at Freeman’s reading I just simply could not get engaged in her performance. There was something lacking in the way that she presented her poems. I would rather have stood in the hot recital hall and listen to Tim Seible over and over again than listen to Freeman’s reading one more time. Also, Freeman seemed hesitant to take questions after her reading was over. Tim Seible had to be cut off because he wanted to keep answering questions. This makes me think that Freeman isn’t such a people person and would be hard to approach. I would feel more comfortable asking Seible a question or talking to him than I would
