John Leo Family Interview Essay

The interview with John Leo was eye opening. His rough childhood and difficult times as an adult did not influence him poorly. He recalls his grandfather as a strong loving man, who made a huge impact on his life. After the loss of his grandfather, his mother abandoned him. Though Leo distrusts women he eventually found love. He continues to work daily and volunteer time in the community. Content with life, no major illnesses, and a loving family, Leo dreams of soon retiring and relaxing in his home oasis. He is 66 and finds it tough to be getting old, yet the comforts of his family make his life worthwhile. Men often remarry faster than women after a failed marriage, which can lead to future divorce (Berk, 2010, p. 489). After witnessing his first two wives commit adultery, he divorced. “When I met Mrs. Leo I knew I could trust her, she was different” (J. Leo, personal communication, February 19, 2012). Leo stated, “when people are married they become one and should stand by one another 100%” (personal communication, February 19, 2012). The Leo’s have been married for almost 40 years. He has a healthy family with seven grandchildren. He is the same type of grandfather to his grandchildren that his grandfather was to him. However, aging causes a gap for those who cannot learn to use technology (Shrewsbury, 2002, p. 6). For example, Leo loves to keep in touch with family, but refuses to use a computer. Leo has poor family history, with ups and downs; however, people are not defined by one act. It takes a person to make a difference in his or her life.
