Lottery and Sidewalk Bleeding

Cynthia L. Garcia October 1, 2014 Eastfield College In both stories “The Lottery” and “On the Sidewalk Bleeding” the theme of violence is present in each story. The author’s give us mix emotions on both stories. In the beginning of each they make it seem that they are having fun, but at the end they are very sad. The stories also make you think about what to expect in life if you follow in those footsteps. In addition there are several ways the stories are like. One way is that there is violence involved and someone dies. At the same time the people believe that the person that got killed deserved to die. Both “Andy” and Mrs. Hutchinson” where killed due to violence. Also in the stories no one tries to help them. The people are scared of what may happen to them is they help them. However the stories are different in many ways. “On the Sidewalk Bleeding” Andy was stabbed by a gang and left there in the alley to die. In “The Lottery” Mrs. Hutchinson” was stoned to death by the town people. Andy was killed during a raining night after he left the dance to go but cigarettes. Mrs. Hutchinson was killed during a summer morning around ten O’clock. The gang uses a knife to stab Andy, and the town people use smooth round stones. In “The Lottery” they pull slips of paper to find out will be the lucky person that is going to be stoned to death. In the story “On the Sidewalk Bleeding” no one knows who Andy was they just know that it was a gang member that got stabbed to death. However in “The Lottery” they know someone from the town will die by the end of the day. Even though the people saw and knew that Andy and Mrs. Hutchinson where hurt and needed help they just stood there or walked away.
