Milestone Two Katherine Cambria Chamberlain School of Nursing Dr. Anita Swartzwelder NR 447 Collaborative Health Care MILESTONE TWO Introduction As for the purpose of this assignment, I chose two SMART goals for the oncology/medical-surgical unit that I work on. The leadership goal is that I will learn how to be an efficient leader by creating a council on the unit for all members of the unit to attend by researching peer-reviewed articles and credible websites on the effectiveness of monthly unit meetings to encourage better patient care, better communication, and a stronger work team dynamic by Week 4. The organizational planning goal I chose was that the unit will achieve the goal of having all staff nurses of the unit being Oncology certified to increase the safety of chemotherapy administration and to improve the quality of patient care. He also discusses what it takes to be a good leader. To begin the meetings, one must first get the meetings going – get the staff involved by using methods to motivate staff members to come and participate in the meetings. He also suggests “drawing from a large collection of journal articles and picking out pieces that would be of interest to the staff” (Spittle, p. 32). Keeping a positive attitude during these meetings is also very important. He also suggests “having an open communication meeting where the staff themselves run it. Allow for employees to openly discuss challenges and wanted successes” (Spittle, p.32).
