The career path of neo-natal nursing requires a lot of work in nursing school and finding a good work environment, but the benefits of the job are outstanding. I have chosen this career path because I like to help people. Another reason I chose this career is because I enjoy being around babies and I think they are such a miracle. I will enjoy the rewarding feeling of being able to help as a new life begins. I realize this career may be stressful and even sad at times. Hopefully, the joy and ability to help as a new life begins will out -weigh the negative . Becoming a neo-natal nurse requires a lot of work in nursing school. Neonatology is a specialized area within the field of nursing. The requirements in this special area are much more difficult than basic, traditional nursing degree requirements. Neonatal nurses are registered nurses who provide care for newborn babies. In order to become a neonatal nurse, a bachelor of Science degree in nursing is required. Many science and math courses are necessary for the degree. In addition, health assessment, nursing types, patient care, and child and infant care are common nursing program courses. These courses will create a need for a lot of time dedicated to studying and completing assignments. Along with the course requirements, students will be required to spend time completing clinicals. Clinicals are designated times students spend working in hospitals, NICU’s (Neonatal Intensive Care Units), and well-newborn nurseries. Students are supervised and evaluated by licensed nurses while completing clinicals. Clinicals are important to the degree program. They provide an opportunity for students to gain knowledge and actual hands-on experience in the field. This is a good way for students to make sure that nursing is the right career path for them.
